This is straight from the MR site:

"It seems we’ve experienced some "Tribble Troubles!" Right before the Starfleet Assault Phaser & Mark IX Science Tricorder pre-sale began, a group of these little critters found their way into our main terminal and changed the currency of each item from U.S. Dollars to Federation Credits! As of August 15, 2008, the price of each item will be raised by $50.00:

STAR TREK Starfleet Assault Phaser: $499.00
STAR TREK Mark IX Science Tricorder: $399.00
Keep in mind, if you place your order before August 15, 2008 you will lock in the current discount! Thank you for your patience and understanding while we figure out a way to beam the Tribbles back onto the Klingon ship!"
 
Yeah, I saw that.

And I find the whole idiot fantasy explaination insulting.

Why talk to customers like they are children?

These items are high end collectibles, expensive.

They want to raise prices suddenly after a long established price has been set, fine. Give a real reason, and give your regrets for doing so if it was neccessary.

There are other fantasy explainations too.
How about oh my, the tribble ate my credit card!
 
No big deal, I think it is funny. Clearly they are just having fun, and I would rather see that then just the normal dry PR statement of raising cost due to blah, blah, blah answer. Actually makes me accept the price change better. :thumbsup

MR has already angered many, so I think pulling the cutsy stuff is a mistake right now.

The humor is fine, as long as they gave the real reason too.

Shipping costs go up? Price of labor in China? unexpected rework?
Whatever. Square it with us.
 
I guess as one of the non-angry ones it just does not bother me, I don't need a reason for the change - I prefer it this way. You don't have to justify the increase to me, the joke is much better then any reason you would give - as the reason means nothing to me, the price is what it is.
I prefer the press release as it is:thumbsup
To each there own.

Seems to me that they would just like to scare you into buying faster.

Thus part of the reason why they did it. Maybe it would have been more appealing if it was actually cute and humorous. As it is, Cessna is right, it sounds condescending. They really can't afford to alienate what small customer base they have left. But at least it seems these are actually going to make it to market. One last hurrah for MR before the ship sinks...
 
Of course, half of the people who were on the fence about these, or waiting until MR had them in stock just said screw you MR. Not very bright on MR's part. :rolleyes
 
Waiting until MR had them in stock is kind of silly. Since they don't charge you until they ship. But I know what you mean.
 
Very dumb, and that increase goes right to transportation costs and the two price adjustments the resin market is expecting in August.

Ugh... All they have to do is tell people what the real story is... maybe I should use this with some of my business associates... well a vendor told me that a group of rouge trolls decided that they wanted to play with the propellers of the cargo ship our containers were on and because of the damage and the extra weight we need to cough up a few extra bucks. Oh yeah and they also said a flock of fairies messed up the tooling in our overseas production facility and that cost is being passed on to us as well.

So condescending.

I was really looking forward to the Assault Phaser...but I wanted to wait and get reviews on it before sinking the cash into it.

But now...at $500.00...no way. (Regardless if the reviews are glowing.)

That sounds like ebay pricing. How much did the TOS phasers go for initially?

Is the Assault Phaser going to be all metal like the TOS one? Does anyone know? Has MR even said yet?

The resin market is tied to the price of oil per barrel. I know that there have been 3 pricing adjustments to the resin market over the past few months and there are two anticipated for next month.

I am willing to bet the majority of the additional cost is transportation. Cartons full of resin from China or another overseas country to the US is not cheap and flying them is even more expensive.

I was looking forward to this piece as well, but I might have to consider other options out there if I want it, or wait it out for resales and hope that someone will want to unload it quickly. I have to agree though, $500, starts to take it out of the reasonable category. That doesnt mean I dont want it, but it does give me a moment of pause.

When I read that MR statement, I had to think for a while before it gets to me. Sure its the cost of oil that is making prices go up, from Manufacturing to Transportation and other hidden costs. Sure, its made in China and when the Olympics finishes, there could be a lot of problems there. Maybe prices would go down again or a big recession could rock the whole World.

MR tries to inject humour into their message to soften the blow but it might work differently. Because, as far as I know, Tribbles do not know how to work terminals. They just eat and breed! :lol

(Oh heck. Maybe they just ate all the resin........):eek
 
The price of taking so long to get to market. These were originally shown on the product schedule when originally, 2005? I don't remember exactly, but it seems like it's been a very long time ago. The American Dollar has dropped over 13% against the Euro in the last year alone, in addition to the dramatically higher transportation/raw materials costs.

The original price of the Phaser from the MR Website was 399.00 for the LE and 499.00 for the SE.
