MR signature plaque question

i got a question regarding MR sig plaques.

i there any way to protect the sig from waring off???
saw someone over at rebelscum who sig plaque got smudged.

i was thinking of masking the plaque up to the white place and sparing it with a modelers topcoat or hairspray.

any input on this would be great before i screw up 2 plaques:cry

I guess a spray-on clear coat can help protect the signature itself, but you might wanna try it on some other piece of metal before ruining an MR sig. plate ! Also keep in mind that if for any reason you want to remove the clear coat (i.e. it starts flaking off) chances are you will rub the signature away with it :unsure

could try with a fake sig of my own to see what happens, but the white signature space on the MR plaque is what kind of material?

this could get interesting....

Is this the thin plaque with an applied white area for the signature?

I have sample plaques if so I could try to wipe a smudge from.

What kind of a smudge?

yes this is the thin plaques im talking about.
i dont have a smudge on mine but want to protect the sigature in some way to avoid rubbing it off or something like that.
i think it was masterobiwan who had the smeared mark sig on a esb plaque and then he cleaned it off completly.

i really want to prevent such a thing happening to my plaques and may help others along the way...

I would assume that means the danger comes from cleaning products, if you leave the plaque in the case and do not touch the face it should be fine.
Adding something over the signature is dangerous as it may have a reaction with the ink or the surface and it could destroy your piece.

the member at RS had some kind of packaging material around the plaque when it damaged the signature, thats the reason i have been thinking of ways to protect it.
apparently the maker used is not permanent.

i will not take any risk of damaging a mr plaque before im sure it can be possible to do it without any damage.
thats why i was thinking of doing an experiment with my own sig on a plaque but need to know what the white space on a original plaque is made of.
then use what ever solution that was brought up here to see where it goes.

On all of my MR Signature plaque's, I've left them in the plastic envelope they came in, even when I've displayed them, and I've never had any problems with them fading or getting messed up and I've had them for over 6 years.

My MR plaques discolor tarnish a little every now and then. To bring them back I feather dust them 1st, then use a Hoppe's silicone gun cleaning cloth to buff it back out avoiding contact with the signature area.

As we (me and my partner) did all but a couple of the MR SW and ST autograph signings for MR, I can tell you we always used Sharpie Industrial Fine Point Black pens. This is designed to be the best permanent pen made by Sanford.

As such, they should not fade in normal display situations.

This does not mean a chemical cleaner or abrasive product won't remove it, which is where you have to be careful.

There are two kinds of autograph plaques MR used, the thick shiny ones that tarnish, and the thin ones that do not. I wrote instructions over at the rebelscum forum for how to remove the tarnish from the thick plaques, while not remove the signature. The thin ones, I've never seen nor heard of them tarnishing.

Does anyone have leftover Malm's Formula #10? I have significant tarnish on a couple MR plaques.
