MR Falcon

I guess they forked out a great amount of money for a great photographer. I guess it's just a lot of digital post in Photoshop.

I really hate being wrong about things like this. :(

Cobywan:

I'm no expert, but as Barry explained to me one time, I believe MR studio photos involve the model being photographed several times in super high resolution and then overlayed on top of one another... Something like that - I can't recall the exact process.

Yeah, nothing says this is straight out of a camera. If I had to guess, it's had a levels/curves adjustment to it to help it mesh with the solid black background better, and probably a lot of desaturation to compensate for the exaggerated color that would result from any contrast increase.

The shots are straight out of the camera. MR use a great photographer by the name of Don Corning who handles some of our professional product shoots. He's the man who shot the lightsabers that had the prop guys screaming CGI also.

Don's just amazing at what he does. As far as I'm aware the Falcon was shot on long exposures to get bloody good depth of field. I've sat in on Don's shoots and it's amazing the way he paints with light. The Falcon shots were cropped/matted on layers so that MR could drop them into any background we wanted.

I added in the lighting effects and the suggestion of cockpit lights because the first paint master completed by Dean had no electronics installed, and yes the hue/saturation of the picture has been altered to reduce the red on the Falcon which photographed completely differently to how it looks in person. The pictures are digital photography, not CGI. They are Dean's paint master and incredible examples of Don Corning's art.

Barry, what kind of mounting point (single, multiple, threaded, etc.) does the Falcon have?

Thanks,
Allan

Now that the photography debate is over.... :D

anyone know what kind of mounting point(s) the Falcon has?

THANKS.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question.

The Falcon is pole mounted onto a 1.5 inch acrylic rod, which is secured to a metal plate in the base. The top of the rod has a jack plug which provides the connection for power to the internal lighting. The power adapter plugs into a small socket on the corner of the display base next to an on/off switch. There is no threading, the rod fits into a custom sleeve which is attached internally to the metal frame. The mounting point is located in the Falcon's underside gun turret.

Cool. Thanks, Barry. Do you know what size the jack is. Am I difficult, or what? :)
...any pics that can be posted of the base without the Falcon nesting on it?

I know we changed it to a larger one late on, so I'll check and get back to you. I have more pics of this darn model than you can shake a stick at but I don't believe I have one of the base standing on its own.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but is the falcon going to have canopy glass? Don't know why I didn't think of this before but it just popped in my head while I was looking at the MR pics. I'm assumeing the real falcon didn't to prevent glare from the lights, but somebody please tell me the MR bird will have a canopy. If it doesn't, at this size it's really going to take away from the realistic look of the model IMO and since the replicas aren't being made for filming but for display I can't see leaving it out. What do you guys think?

Glass doesn't scale well. Looks like a model. And if the studio miniature didn't have it, I don't want it, either. :)

Welcome to the forums. I received a similar email. Should be here before the holidays. Now to get a cover over her... don't want to have to dust all the crevices.

Fair enough, hopefully when I put a cover over it that won't show up to bad. For really small models like the FM I agree with you, but at this size it will be very obvious it's missing and I thought the glass would actually add to the realism not take away from it. I just really wanted it to look like a real ship, the way the falcon would actually look, whether the filming miniature had it or not is irrelavent to me, I'm not a bent nail through the clamp kind of guy, but you can't please everybody I guess. :p I'm going to be extremely happy with it either way so don't get me wrong, but if I had my rathers that's the way it would be. Wouldn't want a model of a car without a windshield would ya, would look kinda funny. :D

Hmmm I ordered an SE but did not recieve any notification... I may have to call the customer service and inquire if I don't hear anything in a few more days...

The originals did not have canopy glass, and I don't want it on this replica either. plus the canopy glass would make it harder to see the details inside the cockpit - which I want to see ;)

If you wanted to you could probably add the glass to the model without too much trouble. I fI remember fromt heconstruction pics Dean put up you couls probably get the whole cockpit off an on without too much effort ;) It might be worth a PM to dymerski and ask it you really want it...

I finally ordered mine. I am planning on building a special glass case coffee table to house it. Probably on the order of 27"x 48" with 9" of inside height or so depending on the model and display height. When someone gets theirs please post the dimensions of the display height.

This is a studio scale replica, and as such, if the studio miniature did not have canopy glass, the replica should not have it either.

Good call, MR.

Okay, okay, I get the point.:p I'm probably as anal about the paint job as others are about the glass, everyone has their thing I guess. Yes MR did a fantastic job on this replica and I'm not dipleased at all, I'll enjoy it very much even without it.

Thanks Dade for the tip, I'll ask Dymerski if thats an option. :D

The Falcon's base is 26.25" x 36". (if it didn't change, again...) The height you will need to give good clearance above the cockpit at the angle the model is displayed is approximately 13" - 14".

Hope that helps.
