Movie trailers: Remember when they didn't give away the story?

I hate modern movie trailers, they give away half the storyline to the film. I always love seeing the old trailers from the 40s until the early 90s but it's the ones that are mini documentaries i love. My copy of Logan's Run has one that's about 5 minutes or so long and has cast interviews and behind the scenes stuff. I know there are also one for 2001 and 2010 that were shown in theaters. Anyone else remember more of these?

Ugh I know! I avoid the trailers like the plague for the movies I really want to see. For instance Man of Steel and The Wolverine.

I completely agree. The trailer for Cabin in the Woods gave away the entire twist behind the movie. I usually want to know as little as possible going into a movie...

It's like the ability to put a hook in the trailer to get the audience in has gone. It's partly the fault of the public for having the attention spans of toasters too, the studios think we're idiots who need spoon-fed.

Agreed. Also the intros on some DVD discs are spoiler heaven. One of the James Bond films actually shows the bad guy's death in the intro blowing the entire film.

Mentioned this in the thread about the Europa film. Seeing one of these trailers basically saves you from seeing the actual film :facepalm

I know this movie is divisive, but the trailers for IM3 did a pretty good job misdirecting the audience and not revealing some of the bigger plot twists.

Nothing was worse than the endless recap during the TNG Best of Both Worlds theater presentation. By the time we got through the BluRay season 3 preview and the behind the scences look we had already been exposed to the most dramatic moments at least 3 or four times.

New films are no better. I was really hoping for more suprises for Dark Knight Rises... guess I shouldn't have kept up with the trailers and tv spots. The entire film given away.

Meanwhile, IM3 misdirects and everyone complains.

These days you'd have to discontinue all television, cable and antenna, viewing and pretty much stop going on the internet to truly not know anything about a movie. It seems studios are banking on making you familiar with their product before it comes out almost as a precaution for maximizing their chances of success.

That was probably their idea of the hook even though it's a massive plot point.

They assume the person buying the movie has already seen it, which is a fair assumption.

I always love the trailers that have really good stuff in it only for you to find out that it's stuff they cut out of the real movie. Or in the case of some game companies made just for the trailer and not the game.
