Just mist it over a gloss black base coat. You might end up having to mist on 15 coats to get the reflective finish you're after, but it's well worth it. After that, let it cure for 3 or 4 days and then you can handle it, without worry. A clear coat will only kill the reflectivity.
The Alclad Aqua-Klear does not effect the mirror finish if you apply it correct and let the chrome paint dry for a few days before applying. Makes it very durable. Aqua-Klears | Alclad2.com
I did a 1/4 scale neca endo with alclad. I found that the hard part is how much alclad to put on as the more you put on the brighter it gets but you start to loose the reflection.

The basic process;
Supply a well finish object - the better the finish the better the result.
VMC were happy to receive objects which had been filled and primed with cellulose primer.
The object must be capable of mounting on a screwed metal rod.
The object is sprayed with a conductive coat of lacquer.
Placed in vacuum chamber and metalised.
Finished object is clear lacquered to stop tarnishing.
At this stage you can ask for tinted lacquer and the object will come out looking like C3PO - the more they apply the deeper the colour.
Don't know much about long term durability but for general decoration / handling it should be okay.
