I got my Moebius Pegasus from CultTVMan yesterday. I had planned on doing a mini-review with unboxing pics etc, but within two hours I had so much of the model dry fit, that the pics became impossible. So I figured I'd just drop a few thoughts on here for those who are on the fence or haven't received theirs yet.
First impression - this kit rocks! The box is huge and heavy! The completed model will stand over 16" long and 6.5" wide. Like so many of their other Galactica offerings, this one practically holds itself together without glue. I was able to dry fit the superstructure in 15 minutes and dry fit the flight pods in another 30.
Side note: The instruction manual is an actual cut corner booklet. It looks like something BobaTrek would have made. A very nice change from the old folded versions that came with the MKII and The Bucket kits.
Sprue flashing is minimal and easily removed, there do not appear to be any major gaps between the "head" and body like on Galactica where I had to scratch build an extra "deck" in between the head sections to alleviate a gap and there was the well documented ridge on the keel where the head met the body. There's gaps on Pegasus to be sure, but from what I've seen, nothing a little putty won't handle.
One of the most impressive things is that they FINALLY broke up the inset details into different pieces. One of my major gripes with the MKII Viper kit was that they could have and should have made the engine inset pieces glue in from the back of the fuselage so you could finish them without having to mask off the whole damned model after painting to get at the engine details. All the inset areas on Pegasus are on one sprue for easy painting and the sprue attachment points are on sections of the pieces that will be well inside the completed body so no need to trim and stick on skewers for painting etc.
I love The Bucket, but that build was problematic due to the aforementioned gaps and flight pods that had a tendency to sag etc. As is normal with these kinds of series when they release the hero ship first, and the lesser hero ships later, they have fixed problems encountered with the Galactica kit in Pegasus' design. (much like real shipbuilding
)
My only lingering hope is that they reissue The Bucket with kit improvements learned from The Beast. All in all, it's an awesome kit and I can't wait to get building on it. If you're on the fence, get off it, and buy one.
