MILLENNIUM FALCON 5' REPLICA

I will post some more renders, I can show you the back side, witch lends added support .
I kept it hidden a much as possible, but in this regard it is not quite as accurate as real Kool shade
I also need to make the curved section for the Cockpit Tunnel.
The small holes / vents on the docking ring cross ways are easy to make , I just need to measure the size of the openings
I did not get the necessary Sherman Kit for that until 2 years ago (the other part needed is from the Tamiya8Rad

Great 3D Modeling work! by the way Geek1138
You work very fast. I have amassed a pretty good library of kit parts over the years , but noting like what, you are going to have by the time you get even halfway modeling all the greeblies.
I would not have the patience to model all of them.
I assume your printing with a Form2 Printer? for the detailed parts?
what type of FDM printer did you use?
I remember spending 3 days (about 16 hours) of my spare tiem just to model the Airfix Hurricane part that sits just behind R2 on the X-wing

Thanks Greeble Gremlin...Well there are so many parts to model, I'm afraid if I don't crack on thru them I will run out of steam or be distracted by another project...easily done!
Yes I'm using a Form2 printer but also the new cheapo chinese Elegoo Mars printer as well, which is surprisingly good for smaller pieces. And my old trusty UM2 for the bigger parts

Here are the renders for the finished lower pits; Should be able to actually start real building on the Port mandible as soon as they are printed

I love to model in 3D, and I've been 3D printing since the late 90s, but I think I'd go cross-eyed o_O:oops:to tackle all the the parts needed for this bird!
I say this, and I am planning on building a 5 footer too.
I have pretty much all the kits stockpiled (save 3 or 4) but as you say I wan to stay focused one project at a time. I finishing the 1/12 X-wing first.
Right now Im working on the servos and Arduino set-up as I want to use my smartphone to control the sound & electronics
I am a bit knew to arduino, even more so with programing UI for IOS Phones.

Your making me rethink how I may do the hull
Thanks for the tip on the Elego Mars Printer I will check it out
nice work!

Cheers dude. So, finally after a lot of modelling and printing, a chance to actually build something.
Got the Port Mandible; plated up, styrene chips, T-section and pipe work done, top and bottom greeblies applied, and all maintenance pits fitted.

Next up are the numerous parts along the side walls

This is incredible Geek!! What an impressive approach you are taking, really entering into a whole new realm of bringing replicas to life! And amazing speed as well!! You are doing fantastic work on this, love the ongoing updates!! Going to be amazing!

Wow thanks Sean...that's high praise indeed coming from the man who built probably the best finished 5' footer I've seen

OK render time again; this is the starboard 'waistband' greeblies. Can't take credit for the, titter inducing, Wankel engine, which was beautifully modelled by Maruska;

Am onto the inner mandible parts now and the inner jaw parts next

Keep in mind I know nothing about 3D printing, can I ask how much a 3D printer costs to make these parts?

If possible could you estimate how much you have spent on materials so far?

An this is the dumbest question. If you have the printer and the files is is just a matter of pushing the print button?

Since building one from scratch is just not a financial option. I think there are 2 or 3 out there, and since no one wants to make what I think would be a fortune on a kit run, this seems like the best option.

Thanks

Hello
a GORGEOUS job !!!!
it would really be a dream for me to make one. Can I ask you to share your files so that I can build one myself?

Really enjoying seeing your progress on this build. And the speed, whoa!

Great work!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys... very gratefully received.

In answer to some questions; Printers can cost almost any amount depending what u want. Resin printers are generally more expensive but they are becoming more affordable.
The actual cost of materials on a build like this is not massive...filament is pretty cheap but resin isn't. I have several jobs running at once so have no real idea of what I've spent so far. It is mostly dependent on how much u can do yourself...modelling, printing, fibre-glassing, welding, painting etc etc all add up if u have to outsource the work.
It can be as simple as pushing a button and getting the results u want but usually there is a fair amount of slicing, scaling and finishing to achieve the desired goal. Of course, that is assuming you have the files to print...and this is the real question I am getting; will I share the files I am modelling? I am happy to share the files of the hull and cockpit where I have just edited other makers open source files for printing AND I have no major problem sharing my own files, BUT it would take some work and time to make them fit for public consumption and right now I simply cannot spare the time to do it.
I would be interested in knowing other model builders opinion on file sharing. On one hand, there is the community that we belong to and want to contribute to; I have given many of my previous build files away, but there is also a risk of making everything so freely available that the props lose that 'special' quality because everyone has one. Some builders have spent half a lifetime making the Falcon and I feel I have earned the right to have one because of the month's of searching thru reference pics and kit scans and acquiring the necessary skills to model each and every unavailable piece.
Anyway on with the progress...

Having modeled every kit part on the Narcissus replica that I'm building, I can really appreciate the work you are putting into this - beautiful job.
I thought the Narcissus was a task and a half, but the 5 foot Falcon is just a daunting prospect. All credit to you - you're making it look easy!
