Metallizing

I got wind of this process by chance, and am tempted to have it done to my stunt lightsabers from efx. But i dont know if it would be a bad idea to do so. So any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, depending on the finish you want, it might be more trouble than it's worth. Chroming something means it has to be SUPER CLEAN and fine, i.e. tons of polishing work before you can get it done to keep it from looking like crap.

Vac metal is a little easier, but it can be a little expensive depending on the company.

You just need to decide if it's something you want to do for the props. If it's something that you want to do and it's in budget, then I suggest going for it. Shiny things are always cool.

I was thinking of doing this to replicate 2 daggers from the Castlevania games. Silver plated daggers are never the size i need and you'll never find a gold one at a good price so i figured i'd get them coated somehow.

Just some quick info on Metallizing for our viewpoint (we are a company who supply equipment for spray metallizing).

2 types of metallizing - vacuum and spray. Vacuum is a process that produced very thin films and is the technology used to make foil coated potato chip packets. Spray metallizing is a process that melts metals, atomises them and sprays them onto the object to be coated. Zinc, Aluminium, Tin/Zinc Steels, Copper and Bronzes are all materials commonly sprayed for decoration. The finish is like a 80-120 grit sandpaper but it is often polished back.

Spray metallizing is used in the film prop industry to make polystyrene props more robust. See Metal Spray Systems - Arc, Plasma, Flame, HVOF Applications | Metallisation Ltd for a press release about one of our customers work. Other companies spray zinc into moulds to make helmets for film props. Pictures attached of helmet and 3D polystyrene map.

It can also be sprayed onto steels, aluminium and some plastics.

The purpose of the email was to inform, not sell. If you would like more info though, please contact us from our website (linked from the press release).

Thanks
