Melting Chavant Clay.

Can anybody tell me how to melt Chavant clay? What to put it in, what heat to use (oven/microwave) etc.

Will it be pourable, or just spreadable, like melted chocolate?

thanks

From what i understand you melt it like you would chocolate, so chop it up, and put it in a bowl. Then put the bowl over a pan of boiling water, the heat from the water should melt the clay/chocolate.
Not tried it myself...but thats what ive read. Need to do it myself, just not got round to it.

I think its pourable to....i'm hoping it is anyway!

Doesn't Chavant Clay have a sulphur content that prohibits curing of certain silicone molds?

What molding compound are you going to use?

Thanks for your help, i'm gonna try melting it over water.

What i'm trying to do, is get it soft enough to spread over an armature.

I can't see any other way of doing it, the stuff is just so hard to use!

thanks again

someone had a thread on here earlier that used a hammer (friction method) to "soften" the clay to apply to an armature or base.

My first time melting it was today. I first tried to melt it in an oven set to 200 degrees, it got soft but not pourable. The oven I used only went as high as 200, that's when I put it on a hot plate. I put it into a glass bowl and put it on an electric hot plate. Cranked up the heat and it all melted into a creamy pourable consistency. I poured it into a silicone mold and will demold it on Monday when I go back into work.
