Medicom Rocketeer Prop helmet?

Saw it on ebay and didn't even know about it. It's a full size prop helmet. From the pics it's looks pretty decent. Any info on this? Was it cast off an original or is it a new sculpt?

To my knowledge the are not wearable...they have a bar in the middle to keep the sides from bowing in...at least those are the pics of the inside and the info I got from an ebay seller. I'll see if I still have the pics.

For accuracy, value and purely as a collectible (non-wearable), it's a cool helmet. It's more accurate than the MR helmet was but it does have a big bar going across the inside to prevent it from being worn. Dunno why they went to such great lengths to prevent it from being worn but they did. I've seen them go for as low as $200 or up to about $400 or so depending on the bidders.

It is a licensed helmet made by Medicom who does of course also do the 12"action figure. Keep in mind, it is unwearable. You could probably modify it but you'd also severely damage it's resale value as a collectible by doing so. I don't have pics on this computer otherwise I'd post one showing the bar inside.

That bar sounds pretty dumb. I guess the unfinisehd kit is still the better deal.

The kit available through Monsters in Motion is definitely the best choice for most uses in my opinion. It can be finished to be very accurate if you put the time and effort into it.

I just bought the kit. Now I've got to find some one with wicked mad skills to paint it for me. on account o' the fact that I don't have any painting skills... :( Plus I gotta find a way to line it, ..plus I gotta figure out the chin strap...plus I gotta find green lenses....

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to it...

What was the problem with the MR version that caused them to stop
production? Anyone who has the MR - do you like it?

That was one time I did get burned by not ordering direct from MR, I was waiting to pick one up on the open market. I guess that will never happen. :cry

The MR helmets were also very hit and miss. When they initially started to ship 4 people posted pics of their and all 4 had a different shape and look. Some people got ones that looked good and others had ones where the lenses didn't even fit into the helmet correctly.

I'm thankful I got a good one I'm happy with.

Were there any official statements from MR regarding these? Are they still planning to ship them, or are the ones that did ship all that ever will?

St. Matticus, are you looking to use green lenses to follow the comic book style or were you planning to replicate the helmet in terms of the movie version? I've finished a few of the kits myself.

Yeah, the helmets were somewhat inconsistent but mostly they were just mashed from side to side. It made the face much too narrow in appearance. Accuracy wise, the liner was excellent and the real metal looked nice though it was definitely heavy. Even with the fin being hollow, it was very back-heavy.

The weathering chemical was pretty sloppily and unevenly applied and they had to do a poor-man's version of the welding lines which where very inaccurate. But that was the cost of doing them the way the chose to do them...

Overall, the price was excellent all things considered. It definitely was not good for costuming - much too heavy to use for that in my opinion. And for accuracy, you're really better off going with a kit version anyway.

The pic below is one of the Medicom helmets - it's taken from one of the ebay auctions that has been posted.

Here is a comparison showing the primary problem the MR helmet had. The pic on the left is a photograph of an original helmet that MR apparently had access to though it appears the eye lenses have been photoshopped in. Perhaps the helmet was missing it's lenses... dunno. Regardless, this is the photo MR used to advertise the helmet. The helmet to the right is obviously the MR helmet and while not all of the helmets looked this way, most did from what we saw posted on the RPF.

Last I heard they had stopped shipping them and were at least looking into the mashed helmet problem. Dunno what's been decided since then but it's been a long time since we heard anything official.

I don't see them on ebay very often. It makes me wonder if the ones sold on that DollTV link are actually shipping or if they are marked as backordered? Anybody know?

I sent an email to DollTV and they confirmed that the helmet is in stock.

Interesting... would love to see pics of the helmets if anybody decides to buy one from them. Maybe they stocked up when the helmets first came out (?)

I found the Dolltv link via amazon.com. You can buy them straight from dolltv or from amazon.com via dolltv.

Dualedge- Yep, I want to replicate the comic book version helmet, with the green lenses. I'm under the understanding that the helmet kit comes from timeslip w/ the smoked lenses though.

My rocketeer project is just getting started, slowly. So far I've only got the abbyshot jacket and ordered the helmet kit. Still gotta get a pack or pack kit and get someone to paint/maybe build it too. Find the boots, (not sure how i feel about the motorcowboy boots), and get a harness...I've been surfing finhead central, but it seems to be a fairly dead forum now.. :(
So, I thought I'd start trying to learn from the Master Rocketeers over here at the RPF. ;)

Yeah, that's the same kit helmet you can get through a couple of places - all made by the same folks. That's the best kit you can get and it does just come with the gray lenses. Let me know if you need help with the helmet. Not sure where to tell you to get the eye lense material but I imagine somebody here can give you advice on where to find green tinted acrylic sheeting. You don't need a massive amount after all.

The rocketpack is going to be a challenge though along with the harness. Finishing that is a LOT of work and from what I've seen, folks that offer to finish those usually want a few thousand dollars simply because it is SO much work. The thing that almost always stumps costumers the most is the harness though.

I try to keep an eye on Finhead central and answer questions when I can be of help but yeah, it tends to not really be an active place.

Finhead Central goes in spurts - I started it to serve as a warehouse of sorts, a place to store all of the knowledge gathered to date. If you want to kick it up a notch, start a thread about your project. We'll all chime in.

I also do helmet painting, in case anyone is interested. I haven't created any of my custom helmet liners in a while, but I still have the patterns and can do them when needed.

Thanks,
Todd

Awesome. Glad to hear you're still doing them. I highly recommend them if anybody has a helmet and if Todd has the time to make 'em :) No helmet should be without...

At the council meeting yesterday, MR said that they are working on fixing the
problems with the Rocketeer helmet so a new version may yet become
available through MR.
