FIRST SUIT

So this is my first post. I was in a cosplay contest and I was Spider-Man. This was my first cosplay and my first suit build. It turned out pretty well, I guess.

_DSC0343 copy.JPG

My suit is made entirely from ordinary clothes. I will show you how I made mine. You will need:
- Two red long sleeved shirts (one that fits you, and the largest size available for the second one)
- One blue long sleeved shirt (that fits you)
- A pair of blue leggings that match the long sleeved shirt
- A pair of shoes (I used boxing shoes)
- A black sheet of foam
- 3-4 sheets of foam (any color, as this is only for the face shell)
- metal mesh
- a plastic sheet
- 3x 4oz bottles of slick black Tulips puffy paint
- one small bottle of red puffy paint

The upper half of my suit is made from red and blue long sleeved shirts. The lower half is made from ordinary blue leggings which I tried to get the blue as close as possible to the blue in the shirt. (sorry for the super crappy image quality, my phone camera is not exactly the best)

11106252_801328669921922_1437116285_n.jpg

I then drew the main pattern on the red shirt to follow the suit's pattern. I layered it on top of the blue. And this is how it looks:

10578461_801328673255255_1394824494_n.jpg

And then I moved on to the mask. For the mask, I followed dal1lomo's tutorial on how to create a Spidey mask from one side of a t-shirt. You can watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW_2q4cv_tE This is where you use the second red shirt. My tip? Use the back half of the shirt. Cut off the sleeves, but DO NOT throw them away yet.

And for my face shell, I also followed dal1lomo's tutorial for a foam face shell. Here's the link to that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6AW6Hznw3A
I coated my face shell with paper mache and spray painted it red. In the picture, I put in lenses taken from a pair of sunglasses (which I took off later on because it was getting too hot and it fogs up inside)

11104197_801328639921925_1381557137_n.jpg

For my lens frames, I took a plastic sheet, cut it to shape, sanded it, and painted it black. For the lenses themselves, I used a metal mesh that I found lying around at home, cleaned it and painted it white. Here's my mask so far with the face shell. Lenses are not yet attached. I had to redo the lenses because the first ones I made were too big.

11103936_801328663255256_1938866542_n.jpg

For the boots, I used a long sleeved red shirt, cut off its sleeves and fashioned them to form a sock-like shape. Sorry, no pic.

So here's what you got so far:

11126956_801328679921921_740680591_n.jpg

I then hand stitched everything, added a U-zipper and asked my friend's mom to double stitch everything up for me.

Moving on to the front spider, I printed the front spider I got from kenlandrum and taped that onto the black foam. I carefully cut it, making sure that the legs are cut neatly. After cutting the front spider and being satisfied, I glued it onto the chest.

11131767_801328683255254_1412614493_n.jpg

Now onto the weblines. I used a permanent marker to mark where I will be applying the puffy paint. I recommend not using a permanent marker, as it spreads everywhere when it gets smudged.

11092098_801328709921918_365648357_n.jpg

For the back spider, I screen printed the back logo which I also got from kenlandrum onto the back. The screen print is only a guide for the puffy paint. Tip: when puffy painting the back spider, outline the edges first with the red puffy. Then slowly fill in the spider until it looks good.
(You don't really have to do the screen print for the back spider. I just did this for the sake of accuracy)
11101902_801328713255251_1658603276_n.jpg

And after hours and hours of hard work, I finally puffy painted the whole suit.

For the shoes, I cut off the soles and did the shoe-inside-and-sole-glued-outside method. Again, sorry for the lack of pics :(

My webshooters, I got from kenlandrum and had them 3d printed from a local 3d printing shop. Here's the before and after paint job:

I used magnets to secure them in place on the suit.

And bam! My suit's finished.

I WAS thinking of adding the blue brick pattern, but I only had three days until the contest, so I decided not to. My total work time would probably be around 2-3 weeks. I added zippers on the forearms like in the movie, and also at the ankles. Now you may notice that the belt is too thin. That was due to the stitching. And also, the face shell made my head look big I was also thinking of making a new one, but I didn't have enough time. But hey, at least I won. :) It wasn't a major contest, it was just something for a school event.

I will be making another TASM2 suit soon, and this time done right. :) Thanks for reading folks. Tell me what you think. :) I apologize if the post is a bit messy and doesn't follow everything too well, but like I said it's my first post.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Suit (No prints, 90% homemade)

I love builds like this. :) The homemade quality of using the t-shirts is exactly what Peter Parker would have done. I may go down this route to make a TASM1 suit. Does the puffy paint on the webs and back spider crack after time?

So far, it hasn't cracked yet. I wore this suit four times now. My only problem with this suit is the face shell. Since it's made of foam and papaer mache, it starts to tear and rip at certain spots.

Thanks for the reply. Did you have to use stitching or anything else on the shirts to make them more skin-tight or were they already close-fitting?

They were really loose when i bought them, even at the smallest size available. I drew the pattern onto the shirts first before hand stitching everything to make the suit skintight. However, due to my lack of sewing experience i had to take the suit to a tailor to strengthen up the stitching.

Thanks again. :) I want to make a TASM1 suit using t-shirts and this thread will be a great reference. Nice job.

EDIT: Sorry if you've already covered this, but how did you make the gloves?

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Suit (No prints, 90% homemade)

how did you make the gloves?

I took some cardboard, traced my hand around it like in the attached photo. After tracing onto the cardboard, I made each finger a little bit thicker than the original traced. This is to allow more space for the fingers to squeeze into. Then i cut that outline up, and traced it onto the fabric. You'll be tracing out four of these, 2 for each hand. Stitch it up, and you're good to go. :)

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Suit (No prints, 90% homemade)

I figured I'll just dump my second suit progress here.

For my second suit, I took Ken Landrum's free TASM2 suit file, and I split it up to have accurate seams like in the movie. I printed edited versions of Ken's pattern onto paper and cut those and traced them onto the fabric. For the red parts, I used this pattern:

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 6.57.08 PM.png

And for the blue, I WAS supposed to send the fabric to a screen printer, but they kept telling me that screen printing on lycra is not possible and that it would cost a lot. So I applied a very very thin layer of puff paint to the brick pattern. Here's how I laid the blue sections out:

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 6.57.32 PM.png

The fabric I used was real cheap. I got mine from a local market, 2 yard of blue and 2 yards of red cost me roughly $6. The red fabric isn't really the best since it's a bit too thin. But I'm thinking that when I start to puff paint it, it would look and feel better.

As you can see, there is no actual printed brick pattern on the fabric on the blue. What I did was I drew them onto the fabric myself using a ruler and a red textile marker. This was the first crotch piece I did, and I actually had to redo this piece since the puffy paint splattered onto the fabric and I made the mistake of spreading it. You can clearly see it here:

_DSC0002.JPG

For the back spider, I did the same technique I used for my last suit. I created my own back spider, screen printed it onto the fabric and puffy painted it. But this time, I outlined the spider with black puff paint before filling it in with red

11737096_842427432478712_70550602_n.jpg 11749457_842428282478627_1037178147_n.jpg

For this suit, I installed a lot of zippers for my convenience. In my last suit, I had a hard time getting into the suit and zipping and unzipping myself up. Whenever my foot would itch inside, I'd have to unzip my suit and stretch the legs out a bit so i can scratch my foot through the ankle zip. And the most annoying thing: bathroom breaks. I had to unzip the U-zip and leave it the top part hanging down as I go pee. So, what I did here is I used accurate zipper placements. One zipper on the back of the neck, zippers on each wrist, zippers on the ankles, one zipper going half up the back, a separating zipper on the waist, another small zipper above the butt (so i can get my legs in the pants section since zippers don't stretch), two crotch zippers, and separating zippers at the boots. All in all, there are 12 zippers in this suit. Here you can see the zips of the shirt section. Keep in mind, these were taken when the shirt wasn't finished yet

And now for the lenses, I 3d printed Ken Landrum's free flat lens frames fils. I used an old speaker mesh, painted it white and cut it to shape.

11720552_842427469145375_360999717_n.jpg

I then attached a clear plastic to the lens frames first using E6000, and then the mesh

I attached these to my face shell with magnets. Here's what it looks like:

Photo on 7-8-15 at 10.54 AM.jpgPhoto on 7-8-15 at 10.55 AM #4.jpg

And then I basted everything since I'm taking this thing to a tailor to strengthen up the stitches. Thankfully the seams didn't pop off when I tried it on.

I will be using my web shooters that I used for my previous suit.

And now for a good pic of the suit so far.

When the suit is sewn, I will start puffy painting it and adding the shoes in. Stay tuned folks.

Re: Matt's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit (First suit + New suit WIP)

UPDATE: I just sent my suit's shirt section to a tailor. I missed out a couple spots to puff paint in the pants section, and I couldn't wait to puff paint the webs of the suit, so I sent it out to be sewn. My tailor says that I could get it back tomorrow or the next day. So my plan is when I get it back, I'll start drawing on the weblines with chalk and go over it again with a fabric marker. And when it all looks good, I'll start puffy painting the webs

Re: Matt's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit (First suit + New suit WIP)

I used the same youtube video as a tutorial for my face shell, but I tweaked it a bit to it matched the ASM look. All I did to alter the look was add that long u-shaped piece to the front part, and it turned out looking way better. However mine is made from card stock, masking tape, and some bondo to keep it from warping.

I switched to a better face shell. I used one of these Iron Spider hero masks from any toy store:

You could go with the Ultimate or Miles Morales actually. But I chose this one so that I don't need to do any sanding or cutting off the webs.

I then cut holes at the top of the head and at the mouth area. Then I added a lycra mask so I can put it on like how they used it in the screen suit.

Screen Shot 2015-07-20 at 3.45.24 PM.pngScreen Shot 2015-07-20 at 3.45.48 PM.pngScreen Shot 2015-07-20 at 3.46.15 PM.png

I heated it also to fit my face better. It works really well for a face shell and it's what I'm wearing in my avatar and the pics above.

Re: Matt's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit (First suit + New suit WIP)

So I guess the seamstress is no good. She said it would be done by yesterday. And when I got there, I found out she's been taking other orders in between mine. So I'm going back to her this morning, I'm gonna ask for a refund and take it to another seamstress. Wish me luck.

Re: Matt's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit (First suit + New suit WIP)

It reminds me of the wrestler suit from ultimate spider-man.

Oh that looks so much better! I wondered how that face shell looked under a spidey mask, and I think I might pick one up myself.

Yup, it does the job. I did heat it up and bent it a bit to fit my face and head a little bit better. Plus I added a little black panel at the chin so it wouldn't slip up my face.

Re: Matt's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit (First suit + New suit WIP)

The first seamstress really p***ed me off. She didn't even sew the gloves or made the invisible zippers look invisible. Kinda defeated the purpose of an invisible zipper, dontcha think? Anyway, so the second one vowed that they'd be finished resewing it by tomorrow morning, as I made up something and told them that I needed the suit done tomorrow morning because I'd still have to draw the weblines and glue the spider for a cosplay contest tomorrow afternoon. And they bought it lol.
