I was shopping at the mall today and walked into Spencers Gifts and saw that they have the MR Vader Lightsaber on sale for $60. Even scratch building a decent saber can cost that much or more. :D

I'm assuming you mean FX rather than LE??? Which version of the vader saber also???

The Vader VX's are just as good as the LE's in my opinion. They use most of the same components. It's what I used for my Vader hilt collection. Just make a few minor modifications and there ya go.

The FX's use inferior components compared to the LE's, plus once you remove the blade the FX's have no 'gut's'.

Having said that, it's good value for money at that price.

If you convert the FX to use a Luxeon LED then you can remove the blade at will, yet it still has lights and sound. That's what I've done with my FXs and I think it's better than spending loads of money on the LEs. No, the material isn't quite as nice, and the older ones in particular are oversized, but for ROTS Anakin, ESB Vader, and Darth Maul it works very well. I'm under the impression that the new ANH Vader and ANH Luke are much more accurately sized so those should also work rather well.

FX as good as the LE? It depends on your expectations. The FX is made up of inferior materials. Lots of plastic. Grips and wires are made of hard plastic with a dull coating to simulate rubber. No emitter "teeth" and so on.

Quite frankly, I think FXs are nice toys, but outright suck as substitutes for the real thing.

I picked up a broken FX and removed the blade. I use it on my belt for trooping. It looks good enough and I don't have to worry about damaging the LE.

And the LE isn't the real thing either...

Is the FX over-sized compared to the LE?[/b]

It's not like the Luke ESB and earlier ones that were crazy oversized. If you replace the obvious plastic parts I think someone would be really hard pressed to tell the Vader ESB is an FX out of a wall full of LEs.

I know the length is spot on. It's the thickness I'm not sure of but again it's not obviously out of size.
