Master Chief first build for my son 2015 Halloween Costume Contest

Hi all, I know most of you are seasoned builders and will spot in-numerous flaws, faults and issues with my build. In my defence this is a first time build of a full suit as requested by my 15 year old. He has a party on Halloween and asked if I could do him an outfit. Giving me two choices, Big Daddy or Master Chief, as he had only given me 5 weeks to do the build I selected master chief (seemed easier). I did some heavy research for a few days to see what was out there, utilising pep files from here, the 405th and those found free on google searches. Now my son is 15 and 6'5" so I could easily use my 6'3" frame as a reference to build the gear around, and it worked well too.

Doing this build alone was an invaluable wealth of knowledge, learning how to hot glue eva foam and not your fingers was a major break through for me.... but then painting foam and the different techniques used was yet again another interesting step. Plastidipping foam is my favourite way to get it painted, adding clips and webbing here and there to fix the cod and butt plates and keep the thigh armour up was a challenge including keeping it hidden. but I am happy with how it turned out and as I haven't done an under-suit my son will be using black clothes as his base. Also interesting fact no one tells you how they get in to the boots in any posts I've read, so to over come this I made the boots as per pep files and other posts and then hot glued an old pair of crocs in to them, plastidipped the whole thing to look good and just told my son wear very black socks.

Resizing files in pepakura designer 3 was a real challenge, I made a classic error with a shin guard making it way to small and had to redo it wasting foam and time. No I didn't use Bondo on the outside as I didn't have the time to fix and sand it all back, so I just filled in gaps with hot glue and hoped it hid a lot of them, and actually gave the armour that field repaired look in some cases with what looked like weld spots that hadn't been cleaned up. the last two images are my son in full armour minus the helmet visor, however I have since put one in but this had to be done el cheapo (contact plastic book wrap, gold A4 document wallet cut up and a clear plastic under template. it isn't crystal clear but you can still see out of it for now. I am looking at making a proper helmet later on as the paper and resin plastidip one is slightly off kilter and looks like some one took a battle axe to it shifting the angle slightly out of straightness :-/ ...

I also made the side arm but with no references as to where it goes officially, I used an idea from an image where I found a toy that has the gun attached to the right thigh so I have done the same as you can see in the last image ;)
