Masking an engraving for painting

Morning all!
I'm working on a project where i have some fine engraving on the piece, BUT i need to hit the whole thing with filler primer.
What can i use to fill the engraving that i can "dig out" later? Liquid latex? Wax? Raccoon tears? Tonsil stones?
