Mandarin comic book costume from Iron Man

After watching the Iron Man 3 movie I was disappointed with their interpretation of the Mandarin villain. So I decided to create a Mandarin costume. My costume is based on the 1960’s comic book version of the Super Villain.
The first thing I needed was a proper head cover and mask. The mask was easy. I used poster paper for a cutout. Then I purchased material and applied double sided tape to attach the material. For the head cover I found a child’s army helmet from Party City to use as the base. Then I trimmed off the edges and added 3 extensions for the front and the sides to give it the full shape needed. I used poster paper to make the extensions and attached and covered them in tape. To create the 3-d look of the head I chose to use green paper with a fabric feel with varying color. I cut multiple one inch circles with a punch and then layered them in a fish scale look using tacky glue.
The rings were made with elastic, hot glue and large craft jewels.
The cape was made with a pattern and sewn with a machine using the same purple material as the mask and boot covers.
The boot covers were made by trial and error by creating a 2 piece pattern. One for a pattern on the legs and one for the shoe cover. I decided to use a pair of old water shoes as the base because it was easy to cover and shape so it looked more like the drawing in the comic books. I also used spray adhesive to attach the leg cover to the poster paper cut out to give it a more solid boot shape.
The belt was just cut material sewn to form a belt cover sleeve. I slid a belt inside the belt cover.
The ‘M’ was made with material and applied with iron on adhesive.
The shirt and pants were made from a trip to the used clothing store. Since it is impossible to match the greens I picked up 100% cotton white clothes and dyed them dark green.
The beard was cut from some furry stuff I found at the fabric store. Double sided tape held it in place.
So now I am ready for the next Comic Con with a true Mandarin comic book costume.
Look out Iron Man!
