Man of Steel (Pre-release)

I accept that, but I still feel some important scenes have been spoilt. Not just because of the footage, but more the footage taken with other news stories.

That may be. That's why I always find it funny when new trailers come out that people complain that not ENOUGH new stuff was shown. These people were the kids that used to sneak into their parents bedrooms every year and know everything they were getting for Christmas, obviously.

Some of us still appreciate the surprise. =)

Well, after hearing all this, I have no doubt you'll be disappointed. I did that once before, reading the screen play before the movie came out... and I'll never do it again. I only did it because my hopes were really REALLY high. Too high. It's hard to set expectations for things you have zero control over and not come out disappointed. Hopefully, you'll be pleasantly surprised. While you may know the script, great performances by actors (and there's quite the list of good ones here) can bring subtle nuances to a line that just reading it off a page doesn't evoke. I've been impressed so far with what I've seen from Kevin Costner... looking forward to what the rest of this has to offer.

We've only seen maybe 5 minutes of total footage in all the previews/sneaks shown so far. The movie is listed as 2hr 18m on IMDb... that leaves a lot we haven't experienced yet. I'd just suggest dialing back your expectations just a tad, and allow yourself the opportunity to enjoy it. It's not like Superman leaves the pages of the comics every day.

Like I said above, I don't think they've shown too much of the film so far. All most every trailer/sneak shown so far is about 75% rehashed/re-edited footage from the original sneak shown at last year's SDCC.

Just from the trailers you could piece this movie together if you wanted to - it's not some work of art (Like what Mank did)
And again, I'll fall back on the fact that this film is being directed by Snyder who is a terrible filmmaker - especially when dealing with nuance and character exploration - which is how they are selling this movie in order to hide the Michael Bayness of it all.

And I have read many screenplays where the movie still got to me -- this one however is unfolding like every other Summer Blockbuster disappointment. I'm not trying to hate this just to hate it - I am however a HUGE Superman fan - The character stands for something other than what they are doing with him - which makes me think Nolan thinks all Superheroes quest for true identity. You cannot tell me the narration doesn't sound like Batman Begins - and there is nothing Batman about Superman.

A statement that has no merit until it is backed by the finished movie, and even then it's still only a matter of opinion. So you go ahead and bash a movie that nobody outside of the studio making the film, including yourself, has seen yet. I, however, am going to wait to see the final product to make a final judgement about it. Although I admit it helps that most of what I've seen so far gives me great hope for the movie. :)

This :thumbsup

Lookin forward to release so we can have some valid judgement about the movie when we can actually see it. And its like with everything that you cant please every1.

He said that it's "unfolding like..." he didn't bash the film, he made a statement based on what's been seen so far of this film. (Sure he take Snyder to task a bit too much - I've enjoyed most of what I've seen from him).

...and he's right on with it. What I've seen so far of this film, it's not the Superman I know and it just looks too dark and murky. It's totally too close to Batman Begins - which makes no sense to me as a Superman fan. Batman and Superman are night and day - just because they both wear capes doesn't mean their the same characters or deserve the same treatment.

That said, I will reserve final judgement until I see the movie... I don't like what I see at all so far, and they are obviously giving us footage so it's silly to think that we are not going to make some judgments based on that.

Here's the one iffy thing for me... Zod not only has his sidekick(s), he has one or more military spaceships! :eek

We're all familiar with the classic Zod story... he and his underlings survived Krypton's destruction because they had been exiled to the Phantom Zone, then escaped to cause trouble.

So, HOW does he have a ship, or maybe even a fleet of ships?!? :confused

I'm getting a distinct "Krypton was never destroyed" vibe here, and that worries me. :wacko

From reading up on this a bit, there was a older story where Zod was not banished to the zone, but imprisoned on a ship very similar to this called Black Zero or something like that. Zod has simply over taken the ship/ships. It's a change from what we are used to, but the looks of the trailer and all things on Krypton with the explosions and what has been said from interviews the fact that Krypton was destroyed won't change. No other reason to send Kal-El away otherwise.

I loved the trailer. Concerned a lot of the film is being spoiled, but love the new direction. There are little things I like and some I don't. Every fanboy has their own opinions but over all I think this film is going to be a great starting point just like Begins did for Batman. The music....ehhh...different. Not bad, but different. Guess I was imagining more of an Inception type score in my head.

If they pull this off and decide to move forward with the Justice League, I'm praying they do a Worlds Finest first. Only way to out do Avengers and skip individual films for Batman reboot, etc I think. Now that movie, could be epic!

I expect full on apologies from the noobs after this film is digested by them - and that doesn't mean right after you've seen it (too many people confuse new with good) - I'm talking after it rolls around in your head for a couple of months and you realize much later - "Hey... wait.... no... that wasn't all that great."

Based on the script and the trailers - This Man of Steel is as close to Superman as Speedballs are to milk shakes.

I agree. Hell this has more to do with DC's new 52 than it does the old school superman which is the entire problem. DC keeps changing things about his history to fit their needs. They changed things in the 80s with Infinite Earths and now again. Want to bet his theme song in this will be some hip and trendy piece of trash by some flavor of the month band like most movies these days. If they aren't full of product placement (the bayformers movies) they're giant music videos for bands they want to make popular.

Well, Henry Cavill did say that his version of superman more closely relates to the new 52 man of steel. So I'm going into it fully expecting the newer adaptation of superman. Somethings I agree should never be changed about the history or back story, however you have to realize that with changing times you have to adapte your story a bit to your audience. Keeping in mind fanboys and prior stories, while also not repeating the same stories either. Much like Nolan did with his trilogy. Keep the heart of Batman, but adapted it to a modern audience while making it more believable. I look forward to this adaptation and hope it's the movie all of us could wish for.

Considering the last incarnation of Superman emulated the Donner version, and it was criticized for the story, I'm not surprised that the studio chose to go "the alternative" rout and try something different. For some of us the differences won't fit into the ideal vision of Superman that we have, others might be more open to the changes. I can't wait myself, I hope to be watching it on an IMAX screen for a midnight show.

Wait, sorry... you lost me at Nolan keeping the heart of Batman and making it more believable... because, Nolan's version of Batman is no where near what Batman's been for the last few decades.

Dark does not mean more real. And Batman does not use his military grade, stick out like a sore thumb Bat-vehicle to shoot at cops.... well, at least the Batman I've known. I could go on... but, this is a Man of Steel thread.

There's nothing wrong with a character developing or evolving; the Batman and Superman characters have changed radically over the 75 years they've been around (a little less for Batman). While I'm not particularly fond of the Christopher Reeve Superman (heresy, I know), I love George Reeves in the television show - I love what John Byrne did in the late 80s - I even read some of the comics... up until the new 52.

Again, darker does not mean it's more real, people. There is absolutely nothing more realistic about Nolan's Batman... and well, Superman shouldn't be dark, he's Bats' opposite - he's bright, shiny and full of home. Not dark and morose... based on the trailers, they should've just called this Superman Begins.

I think trying to make a sequel to the Superman II was just stupid. The Reeve films were almost 20 years old when Returns came out (IV came out in '87)... it made so little sense to try and continue that legacy - well, at least in my eyes.

At first, Snyder seemed like an ideal candidate for Superman. Unlike some, I enjoyed Watchman (although, I still think a nice mini-series on HBO or something would've been much more ideal), 300 was good for what it was - heck, I didn't hate Sucker Punch and while I found it way too long and just over the top, I still dug much of it.

Even though I think Snyder flaked out for changing the end of Watchman (c'mon the whole thing was inspired by the Outer Limits episode Architect of Fear - aliens, man), most of it still rang true enough - he even kept most of the songs in there - that you'd think he'd stay true to Superman. ...again, I will await final judgement until I see the film - but based on what we've seen, I'm not sure if Snyder's seen a Superman comic.

You said you read the first draft of the shooting script. I can't say i believe that, but I can't be sure either. And scripts go through revision after revision after revision during shooting, so a lot of what u supposedly read probably isn't even in it any more. If the trailers don't convince u to want to see it, that's fine, that's how i myself judge whether or not i want to see a movie. I respect that.

So you don't think people are intelligent enough to know the difference between new and good when they see a movie? Idk about anyone else, but I'm insulted by that. And I'm not easily insulted.

Sadly, many fanboys* can't bring themselves to realize that. They tend to think that only they should be catered to when a movie like this gets made.

*Many, not all. Just going by what I've been reading both here and on the Superman Homepage

And some fanboys will buy anything the hot director/producer of the minute (ie Christopher Nolan) sells them and they fail to see that they're getting the same slop with a different name.

...and that is yet another origin tale, this time with a little Bruce Wayne thrown in. sigh.

If I want to see a version of Superman that's similar to Donner's I'll just watch THAT movie.

Everyone's opinions are different when it comes to remaking something so iconic. Some people want EVERYTHING exactly how they're used to. Some don't care too much if things are changed as long as there's a core resemblance of what they're used to... similar (in my opinion) to the Star Trek remake. Some people love it, others hate it. Man of Steel is definitely not going to please the purist fans. We knew that the second the first pictures of the new suit design came out.

And that's the go-to rubbish for the haters to fall back on when they have no better excuse for people who have an opinion that differs from their own.
