Man of Steel (Pre-release)

Oh Brother -- seriously look at that costume - it's so damn dark

Seems like they are going to make a very entertaining movie..... about a guy that only has a few things in common with Superman.

Or maybe it's a Bizarro movie.

My thoughts exactly. JD, what I meant by staying true to Batman was keeping the core of what he was, yet creating a newand unique universe. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and mine simply is the new versions of Batman and MOS seem to feel more realistic based on their filming styles, similar/relateable problems (although amplified for a super-hero), and feel of the stories. Could/would their be a real life billionare that lurks in the night hunting crime, etc. No, today he would be found in a matter of a week. Same with MOS. Simply stating my opinion is some elements of Supes has to be changed to not only cater to the fanboy, but be able to relate to a modern audience who may no little about the character.

This is where the creators (like Nolan) use the comics as a base and go from their. The star trek reboot comment above being spot on. Most fans should be pleased to see a new universe or different side to a character they love without changing it all. And like many movies with such a vast back story or pool of stories to pick from, you appeal to the fanboy base by all the easter eggs and tip of the hat type things thrown into the movie.

Can't appease everyone. From my stand point, you can't simply redo 20-30 year old films. Times change. Keep the base stories, but you have to appeal to a larger fan base in todays age.
WTF?

First off, my statement was a direct reply to "Sadly, many fanboys* can't bring themselves to realize that. They tend to think that only they should be catered to when a movie like this gets made." Which basically took those words and reversed them. I'm not sure how it's right to say things one way, but not the other. It's called hypocrisy... and this thread is full of it.

Perhaps I've slipped up here or there - but, I think I've tried to stay pretty straight and true to my opinion... if someone has a differing opinion, I try to respect it and I try to back up my opinion with facts and reasoning. When someone dismisses my opinion as "rubbish" and labels me as a "hater" because they can't construct a solid argument - well, that shows how weak their skills of discussion are.

I have no problem with changes to adapt a character to film. For the most part, I love the Marvel films, I am looking forward to the new Trek probably moreso than any other film due to come out this year.

As I've said repeatedly - this doesn't look like Superman to me, it looks they've totally missed the mark. The really seem to be taking too much from the Nolan playbook - and like other folks in this thread, I didn't like the Nolan Batflicks (outside of the great casting and performances by Oldman and Ledger). But, if you think Nolan's Batman was true to the character, you don't know the character.

Again, there's nothing wrong with changing/evolving or adapting a character as both Batman and Superman have changed over their histories. I do feel at some point making changes becomes more about ego rather than trying to make a character/story better.

I also feel that there is nothing "more real" about the Nolan films. Again, darker does not mean it's more realistic... I don't get how so many people feel that way. This is a fantasy movie about a guy who dresses up as a bat/from another planet, a guy who gases the population with fear gas, another guys gets his face burned off, etc, etc... not a biopic. :D

I think what everyone means by realistic is:

1. Batman got his Batmobile from an actual military prototype. He actually had to have a R&D guy to be able to make any gadgets, i.e. sourcing and funding etc.
2. There was no massive Gotham layout with giant statues larger than the actual buildings around them, i.e. Batman and Robin.
3. No Bane venom...I mean, really, only characters in DBZ are allowed to increase their size two-fold in a few seconds.
4. Ninjas...ninjas are real, making his training real. :p
5. And not necessarily "darker". I hate when that word gets tossed around and used to shoehorn fans into one ignorant sounding idea. Yes it was a helluva a lot darker than the fruit loops colored Batman and Robin. The villains weren't as outlandish as some of the others. Psychologically, most of Nolan's villains had motives that could be directly linked to something that made sense. They weren't villains for the sake of being villains. You had the mafia, the Chinese, the Ninjas, and the super villains. All jockeying for position at the top of the proverbial food chain.

BTW, My all time favorite villain was the Penguin from Batman Returns. He had a very grim story and his motives stemmed from this. Only villain, besides Catwoman, who had a decent MO...IMO

And just to stay OT...Henry Cavil has the right jawline for Supes

This just keeps getting better and better. I'm so getting a pin with her emblem on it.

Hmmm...lots of varying opinions here.
So...Here's my take. :D

First, I'm a huge fan of remakes in general...straight across the board I love the idea of remakes. Sure, I don't want a bad remake so naturally in my line of thinking I still want a great movie...remake or not...but I'm personally all for revisiting classics and redoing them with today's actors, tech and so on.
Without getting too off topic, I'm still waiting for The Beastmaster, Breakfast Club and The 5 Deadly Venom's to be redone today...and hoping Steve Wang is at the helm of The 5 Deadly Venom's. ;)
But...that's just me.

So...with Man of Steel, from what we've all seen...I feel like I'm finally getting MY Superman. I love the darker colors of the costume...the lack of resemblance between Cavil and Reeves...the seemingly darker tones, the apparent journey Clark goes on to discover who he is or who he feels he must become. Sure, some of that in some way was represented in the first Superman film - which I still LOVE to this day - but I also feel like I'm ready for something new. This to me seems new, in the way that I as a fan of movies want it to be new. So, for me...this is looking fantastic. :thumbsup

Furthermore, the Nolan Batman films for me were outstanding. All of them were fantastic but my favorite is still Batman Begins. Again, with the Nolan Batman movies I finally felt as if I got MY Batman up on the big screen. My Batman was Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns...and in a large way I feel that that's exactly the Batman we got.

I think at the end of the day it all comes down to what we each want to see...and if we don't get what we want to see does that make it a bad movie? Certainly not...but we all have preferences of who or how these characters should be portrayed and the film makers cant please us all.
Story wise, like any movie I want it to be a fun ride...nothing too predictable and some story twists from what we already know from history are always welcome in my book.

So in short, all this to say that I completely respect how some feel differently than I do...and I hope that once this is all said and done that most will in fact enjoy this movie. I guess you never know...I recall a ton of bashing here for DREDD prior to the films release...then nothing but praise...for the most part.

At the end of the day, no one speaks for us all. Not in support or against a movie. We all have our own opinions but sometimes some opinions posted do seem to speak to the tone of 'fact'...when in reality it's just an opinion.

I personally did not enjoy The Avengers, but cannot deny how great a movie it was... it just wasn't for me. That doesn't make it a bad movie, as some would have us believe if they personally did not enjoy a film.

See the difference?:angel

I think Man of Steel is going to be the movie of the year. I guess we'll soon see. :popcorn

No David!!! You're wrong!!! :)

I'm a huge Reeves fan (including Superman III) I really liked Returns. Up until now I have had no interest in this film. However the most recent trailer has upped my interest. I like the idea of Superman trying to figure out his place in the world, as well as the world trying to figure out how to incorporate Superman. I have yet to make it through one of Synder's films though. Hated 300. (Fell asleep in the theater at an early evening showing) and Watchmen was just unwatchable.

I might not be there opening day, but I'll see it and I'm sure I'll find bits to enjoy. Hopefully I'll like the whole thing.

I keep hearing the argument that 'Snyder directed Watchmen so he sucks'. Nobody ever mentioned that he also directed Dawn of the Dead, IMO one of the best remakes around.
Besides, with Watchmen (and 300) he was deliberately going for a particular style and audience. He won't mess up Superman. Personally I can't wait for this movie to come out!

*for the record I have not seen Sucker Punch

For the Record, Dawn of the Dead was a mixed bag for alot of fans.

I, personally, loved it!

I have high hopes for this film. However, if it is indeed a snooze fest, Jet Beetle will be doing cartwheels...

Having just came onto this thread, and reading the last page or so, I have a couple thoughts that coincide with some of the other members in the thread, and I will also lay out some beefs with the movie from what I have seen so far. I apologize if something is repeated, but like I said, I just read the last few pages of the thread.

Regarding Nolan/Goyer collaboration: I personally dont like the "grounded" approach of these movies. Its stupid, like others have said, so trying to make it realistic is kind of pointless. Making it "gritty realism" is kind of absurd. If you have too serious of an approach, it makes it even MORE ridiculous. Michael Keaton will always be Batman, just like Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine. Dont get me wrong, I think Batman Begins is the greatest "comic" book movie of all time, along the lines of Unbreakable. Not with the characters, but with the tone, how he became Batman, his reasons etc. TDK was a superb movie, because I dont think you can be that great of a hero if you dont have that great of a villain. Joker was a totally different take than Nicholsons, which do I prefer? The kid in me says Nicholson, but the adult in me says Ledger. Back to Superman, I dont like the tone AT ALL. Superman doesnt have a terrible past, or any kind of reason to be dark, or brooding, or gritty. Thats why I loved the Donner films, the man actually smiles in some shots. The history itself proves that everyone is safe when Supes is around. He is the hero, he is good, he doesnt wear a mask, there isnt anything to be afraid of, he doesnt have anything to hide. From what I have seen from the trailers, he looks like the biggest somber, wet blanket I have ever seen.

The Costome: I hate how it looks like rubber, with the scaled look, and the dark colors. I kind of like the blue, but I cant stand the dirty, dingy, sheild on his chest. I love the size, but Superman should be vibrant, his cape should be a nice red that looks like a flag when it waves, a shade of blue that doesnt look like black, and his yellow and red shield on his chest should look like a symbol of hope, like they said in the trailer. Dont really care about the underwear etc. The boots look good though ahaha.

The villain: YAWN. Seen Zod before, like someone mentioned, why remake the same freaking villain we say before? Not to mention he is the same as Superman(powers etc), why would I want to see that? I saw enough battling with the same powers in the Superman cartoons. I want to see Brainiac on the big screen, or some cosmic villain I dont even know that much about like Darkseid. Granted I know they have to cater to people that dont know much about them, but educate them with the movie!

I dont know, I really wish they had got someone other than Nolan and Goyer to produce/write, because Superman is an awesome character that can do spectacular things, and I dont want to watch a sob story about a hero that has fantastic powers but is wandering the Earth for watever reason. Let Batman brood, I want Superman to kick ass and change the world. I just dont think this movie will deliver, but hey, thats just my opinion, I hope Im wrong.

Side note: Perry White is being played by Lawrence Fishburne? Hilarious.

I liked watchman and dead!

If the movie does tank you can bet Paul will be on here with a big TOLD YA! :lol

It'll never happen - too many people will confuse NEW with Good - as I said before. By the time it sinks in the movie will be old news. Heck I'm still waiting for apologies for all the others I called -

Don't hold yer breath!

iircc there were a few who came back on the Prequels and said they were hoo doo-ed, momentary lapse of reason, etc etc and now saw the light that they were FRIGGIN HORRIBLE! :lol

The I'm pretty sure that the prequels have been hated since the day TPM arrived in theaters. There was no period that i could tell where people weren't sure.

Oh there was here.

I think you misunderstand my post.

One thread in particular was about a year after the second one came out where some acknowleged the films were not as "great" as they remembered

Yeah - there was much prequel love and special edition love when they hit. I was blasted when I voiced my opinion - and I mean but good.

I think Watchmen was great for what it was. Making that film was a no-win situation as the comic is just so in depth and rich with detail - would've made an amazing mini-series on HBO or something. But, Snyder tried very hard and for the most part made a terrific attempt at Watchmen. That said, yeah... I wish he would've kept the ending Alan Moore came up with.

Sucker Punch is not nearly as bad as most folks would have you believe.
