Man of Steel costume thread

I really don't care for this new costume, it's too busy with the textures all over the base costume and on the S. It might not be so bad if they toned down the texture a bit so that it wasn't so obvious except during close ups and/or under certain lighting and they made the whole S shield smooth.

I really don't understand this current trend of heavily textured costumes, sometimes smooth or only lightly textured is a good thing. Why does everything have to crazy textures or micro patterns printed on them like with the new Trek uniforms?

For me, the new costume makes Superman look more like what I think of him as, an alien! The old costume looks just like, well, a costume!

I agree that compared to the old costume, the new is dark, but by itself, I don't think it is too dark or menacing.

One thing that I really like about the new costume that I don't think we see in the old is that Superman looks powerful and I really think that is important. The comics have almost always gotten this right, but ALL of the movies have fallen down in this area. This is the first time Superman looks like he might be the strongest man in the world.

I understand the power of nostalgia, but when I look at the Reeves costume compared to the Man of Steel costume, the Reeves costume is painfully cheesy and outdated. Did they need to go with the full on chainmail look? No, but to me, the Man of Steel costume is one I can get behind a whole lot more than I can the Reeves costume.

Oh, and the cape IS indeed amazing on the new costume!

Couldn't agree more! I like the new suit and it doesn't look like anything created here on earth to me. And losing the man panties is my favorite part.

Nope. The Reeve costume was a near-perfect reproduction of the classic costume, in pretty much EVERY detail. It's still the perfect Superman movie costume for the era the movie came out.

fixed that for ya.

Honestly - what would WE know about alien clothing? It shouldn't look like ours. (in THIS era)

I can't argue that the Reeve costume is indeed a near-perfect reproduction of the classic look. But the question is, should that be the look for all time?

I get the need for the underwear over your tights look back in a more modest era, but to me, the undies-on-top look is very dated and almost silly at this point for a Superman set in our time. Do "no undies" break the classic look? Of course, but how can you guys still think that looks good for this character?

This again comes back to my question about nostalgia. Are you just wanting more of the same because you are familiar and comfortable with it, or do you truly feel the manties are a better look?

To me, the red undies, along with the classic suit, is a better look. However, as long as the story has a Superman true to his character, I think I can overlook the new design. And, as long as Ma Kent makes it for him, then cool.

One big problem for me is how they keep making the "S" an Kryptonian thing. What's wrong with it standing for "Superman"? I mean, Siegel and Shuster had it that way, and Byrne reiterated it in his Man of Steel run.

The "red undies" look has been around for 73 years. So yeah, it's not a "modern look" but, Superman is not a modern character.

It's also not a "natural" look - unless you're a wrestler, the undies over pants isn't something I wear around a lot. ...and even the wrestler bit is more about tights than undies over pants.

So why "red undies" over blue pants can't be considered an alien look is beyond me.

Change for change sake isn't always a good thing.

Superman will always be my favorite comic book character. I love the Byrne era - I think it refocused the character in a very good way. And Superman really needed someone to come in and run that franchise - because everyone and anyone had a take on Superman and everyone approached it differently.

I don't think the Donner/Reeve movies did him justice. Yes, it was very cool to see Superman really fly and that kind of stuff - but, the Clark Kent stuff was just poorly done (again, my opinion). I always thought the 50's George Reeves TV show got it right.

I don't like the changes they've made to Superman that we've seen so far. Superman wears his bright costume proudly. Why bright garish colors and the old Superman S can't be just as alien as the current dark, textured trend is beyone me.

or do you truly feel the manties are a better look?

Lmao!, please no more manties on superheros.

I dig the new suit, looks more modern, alien-ish, and out of this world. Superhero's got to change their style with the times just like regular people to. ;)

Does the fact that he isn't a modern character that he is forever doomed to wear a costume created for another era? I understand if people don't like the new design, but for those that feel that the red manties are the ONLY acceptable look for Superman are stuck in the past and not acknowledging that his costume design was a result of when he was created and if he had been created today, he wouldn't look the same way.

Despite the fact that I truly do like the design we have had thus far, and prefer it, I could accept changes to the suit (as bad as Jim Lee's new design is, and "different" as this is, it's not Electric Bugaloo bad). Change is inevitable, yeah?

In the end, it's how they've messed with his character that gets me the most. That shouldn't change no matter what era we're in.

The Suit change is only temporary - there's no way it'll last. It's not like the stories will get better because you took away the red briefs. They get to sell a few issues to the "collectors" and then it's over.

Come on Art - at least put a picture of an authentic Reeve costume in the comparison instead of one of the horrible Armando Alvarez Fakes!

For what it's worth, the new costume does look good in these pics and I guess it fits in with the Zach Snyder kind of production design.

For those crapping on the new costume... are you SURE you aren't just remembering the Reeves costume with just a little more nostalgia attached to it than a critical eye to what looks cool?

From Here thought going to put it here:)

I like the new design overall, but yes,it can be better, and too dark for Superman as the character,if only they change the blue a bit brighter.....and the crotch 'bump' is disturbing :facepalm:lol

This I can agree with 100%. I have little issue with the costume changing, but I agree that it isn't the clothes that define you but your character and actions. When that is changed (ehhhmmm... Superman Returns...) then it really isn't the same person anymore and I can see people getting up in arms.

While there have definitely been naysayers, I find it interesting that overall, Batman doesn't seem to have endured the same flack as Superman when it comes to costume changes. I wonder why it is ok for him, but when it comes to Superman, that costume is a sacred cow for so many.

Sorry about that. I picked up the first image that looked like it came from a Profiles catalog.

No problem. :lol
Yes,unfortunately there have been a lot of fake costumes sold by auction houses in the past. Very sad to think that some naive collector has paid tens of thousands for a cheap, not very accurately produced replica costume! :eek

this still has a lot of stuff to change, like the arm cuff thingies, and the cape attachments. But other than that, i wouldve preferred this one.
except that he needs a shave.

I love love love the new suit!!!!:thumbsup

I Sort-a-liked the Returns suit...and loved the Reeves suit.

I think they're all valid, and represent the hero well....but it's the movie as a whole that has to hold its own....and I've got high hopes for this one!!!!

I also don't want to see a rehash of the same suit over and over again. Reeves was done right, and it really worked for that time period too. Today, in 2012 I want something new and fresh...all the while still evoking the spirit of the character, so in that respect I DO want new suit designs and if these movies continue to deliver then they're even more so justified in their execution.

Anyhow...:lol

Can't wait!

David
