Man of Steel costume thread

That outfit needs a Reeve and a whole different suit.

That doesn't look like an honest Superman to me. His face alone doesn't look like a guy I could trust. He just looks sketchy! Not excited about this movie at all right now.

Ok. So the new pictures helped a lot.

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the belt/side area. I don't mind the cuffs and I actually like the colors.

My main issue is that I can't look at the costume without thinking Krypton-dong....

is it just me or do the newere pics make it look like the suit is made out of bubble wrap!?.

I actualy kinda like the suit. Sure its not what we all have come to know and love, but honestly, the superman suit always looked a little funny to me, it is iconic but change can be good, note I said Can be good. This might not work but then again it just might.

Wow...that suit is something else ain't it? well, they did flip Batman on his ears so maybe this'll be what makes Superman good...though that outfit is a bit of a trip.

I'm liking it. Not perfect, but looks serious enough while still being recognisable as a Superman costume. Really better than the Superman Returns costume.

It looks to me like it was designed by whoever designed the new Spider-Man costume... Heavy-handed textures, lots of 'swoosh' lines that don't quite wrap-around, etc.

The better pics help but I still think it's far from perfect. I'm sure I'll get used to it... but having grown up with the Reeves Superman, I think at this point, I'll always see this with that bias in mind. It's just another missed opportunity to do something that would have been both faithful to the original while still offering a modern revision and be much cooler than that.

My wife said it reminded her of the SNL sketch the Ambiguously Gay Duo. All he needs is a bright red thong.

My first thought on the picture:

Seriously. I heard the cape was going to be CGI'ed on and I bet that's true because I can't see how any mere mortal could walk around in it without tripping or getting it caught on everything.

Didn't Edna warn about this design flaw??

I played very quick in photoshop for traditional and adding red as not shorts using the suits new curved lines for kicks.

Not sure if it improves but...

Could you please put a yellow belt under the red shade on the rightmost pic? Thanks.

I think they should have done something like this:

In their version, there's too much "red" up top. You've got the cape and then the chest logo so high up and then there's nothing to break up the lower part of the costume apart from the little buckle.

I also think they should have styled his hair on the opposite side to how he appears as Clark. (Reeve was wise to make that suggestion for his version). Shame they don't have the "S" curl on the hair too.

Actually, I think the cape in that photo might be photoshopped although there are plenty of other photos of him walking around in a practical cape to prove your point.

I only say that because I've been working on my own manipulation of that photo (below) and the cape just has a photoshopped vibe to it. Maybe I'm wrong and it doesn't really matter... it's just my kneejerk from staring at it too long.

Below is my quickie version - this is what I'd have preferred seeing if they went the "no shorts" route. There's kind of a nice symmetry with the way the cape attaches to the shoulders and the way the belt comes around to meet the buckle that just ties the design together better in my humble opinion... Just seems more "regal" to me I guess.

No sir, I don't like it.
I didn't really have a problem with them loosing the red undies, but all that 'costume designer vomit' on the side is tacky and serves no purpose (just like the new spiderman costume).

This guy looks jacked. I agree with alot of the design complaints - especially those rased swooshes on his sides, they really serve no purpose and makes things a little over-designed.
I won't let my complaints about the costume judge the movie though. We will see...

I see the term Regal from time to time regarding this costume and it got me to thinking. There really isn't anything Regal about Kal-El. He wasn't born of royal blood. He is the son of a scientist who was mocked and laughed at by the High Council members of Krypton. Kal-El - Clark - Superman doesn't need to be set up as being anything more.

He is a being with the power of a god, so now he has to look like one, too? (I'm not a symbol of Hope, I'm your God. Obey me!) The thing about the classic costume, with the red trunks, made him a man of action. The all blue suit with mandarin collar looks more like a formal outfit than something to be worn while he's at work.

The texture I can live with. The piping on the sides I can't. Why is it even there!?! It makes it looks like a bad 90's superhero design.

And the colors! The costume is so dull and washed out. I mean, Snyder wasn't afraid of making Dr. Manhattan neon blue and having Silk Spectre sport super bright yellow... so why does Supes look like he was contrast adjusted in Photoshop. You can actually see a brass-like color on the thin piping where the belt should be. Why not just give him a full yellow belt?

And why isn't he wearing the cape? Are these sequences going to have a CGI cape or something? The only reason I can even fathom a CGI cape on a ground sequence is if Snyder pulls his standard slow-mo sequences. But what I'd like to see is the environment and background characters in slow-mo but have Superman moving at normal speed (like a reverse perspective of his super speed). Honestly, that's the only slow motion I would want to see in this film.
