Maltese Falcon

Just to let any other Maltese Falcon fans know, I am currently about 80% done with a brand new, hyper-accurate sculpt of the dingus. It's taking me a bit of time because I am matching everything up from measurements taken from the auctioned bird and double checking them with high-res screen captures from the film. This is a meticulous milimeter by milimeter reproduction.

Once complete, I intend to offer a few different versions to give options based on taste and budget. There will of course be the base resin and plaster birds, gold plated, and the full-out cold cast bronze piece which will replicate not just the look, but the heft and feel of the original.

And for anyone who's wondering if I can deliver on all this, feel free to check out some of the work I did for Harry Potter as a reference.

Pics coming soon.

Ciao

WOOT!!! I'm jumping on line for this based just on those Potter props! I can't wait to see what you do, and if it's not too crazy expensive, I'd even spring for that full bronze one :love:love:love

No solid lead version? The lead version is only 47 pounds. If your going to do it, why not go all out. Of course you'll need wax copies and plaster molds...but it can be done.

awesome dude, can't wait for pics! I just have my plaster one i found at Salvation Army for $5. I say someone offers a large bounty for Adam's original sculpt. Go steal it.

I can't wait to see an extremely accurate replica of the Maltese Falcon, I don't mind who makes it I just want one...;)

I'm a very hard person to please and am pretty sure I have OCD when it comes to props and comparing replicas to the originals!!!

Good luck with your build Ozymandius!!

Would love to see some progress photos and learn about your methods obtaining accurate measurements. Can't wait to see this one. If you're keeping a notification list, please add me to it!

Once I get the bird to a point where I'm satisfied that everything is in the right place I intend to post pics so that you guys can help me spot anything I might have missed. But right now, for the sake of the creative process, it's better that I work it out myself first before opening it up to critiques. At that time I'll also show you methods used so you can see how I got there.

Thought I should mention that there will be a slight delay. I had expected to be done with the sculpt earlier this week, but due to a family medical emergency I had to leave town on Tuesday and wasn't able to work any on the bird this week. But I'm back in the lab tommorrow and should have something for you shortly.

Interested in one if the price is right. Let me know. And hope that you've learned from Adam Savage's mistake and accounted for shrinkage when sculpting yours. Once cast from the master, the castings will be smaller!

Hey Guys...just a newbie here.
Good luck on the Falcon, Ozymandius. I m sure it will turn out very well with great detail from what i seen in your other pieces.
Almost got a haunted studio one but after seeing Adam's video and reading the threads here, i think I will wait for one of your base statues (Don't know if when Adam will get around to his run and I dont want to drop bronze one on my toe.)

P.S. - nice looking fedora there, Marc.

All I can say is 'WOW'! I stumbled upon this website through CoinOpSpace.com. I am searching for reproduction sideart for an upright Star Wars video game cabinet I am restoring.

I have to say that what this site does is straight up my alley. I seem to go into OCD mode when items come my way. It almost doesn't matter what it is but I need it to be accurate by any means. The 'Maltese Falcon' seems to be a 'Holy Grail' sort of object. Especially if you've watched Adam Savage's lecture on YouTube.

My interest is piqued with Ozymandius' entries. I hope it comes out great. Please let me know when a version is available for purchase. I'm into everything so my name will start appearing throughout the site. Take care all...

The color is interesting. Was the original this color, and we only assume it was black because the film was black and white?

If someone could make a simple 3d model of the bird we could make it into a pepakura file. Then we could add clay or bondo onto it and sculpt it so it looks more like the real thing.

If you take a look at this page, scroll down to the Prop section where it talks about the Falcon, it's worth a read:

Here is a picture of one of the Falcons made out of lead:

You can read the details of this Falcon here:

With regards to the Resin Falcon I can't see why it would have been another colour to what we see above. I believe it just looked black on screen, this is just my thoughts and maybe someone more in the know will be able to tell you. Although I like the colour of the Resin bird I prefer how we see the other replicas out there, almost black looking. (then again....???)

Here are another few pictures of the Resin Falcon for you:

I've always thought that the resin Falcon's coloration was due to wear rubbing the orginal paint off, leaving raw/aged resin visible. Remember, resin was not a common prop-making tool back then, so who knows what sort of crazy formula they used, and what it's base color was originally. It could have been sitting in a window causing its color to change.

Just look at all the places that would get less wear on them, they are still black. I'm sticking to my guns that what we're seeing is natural weathering. I know we're all so used to seeing artificial weathering, it might just be hard to recognize it when we see the real thing. :p
