Making some Wolverine claws...

Hey gang,

So I'm trying to get excited about the new Wolverine movie coming out this week and I thought a good step would be to take a quick stab at making up some claws.

I began by looking at as many pics of the movie claws I could find to get a sense of their design. I also got some help from NoHumorMan with a nice profile shot of some claws he had to help confirm and improve what I had in my own plans.

I knew making metal claws by hand in less than a week was not an option, so I had some sheet styrene lying around which I laminated to get the thickness I wanted and set about cutting out the shape of the claw with my Dremel. Once I had the profile blocked out, I took some files to it to get the sharped edges and contours worked in.

I gave it a shot of primer to see what needed the most work and then laid on a little spot filler. A little more filing and tweaking and I was left with a claw that I'm going to call good enough for this project.

I did a little test fitting on my hand and it seems to work OK.

So I'll give it another spray of primer and then figure out how to mold this thing up. Then I'll need to cast up a full set of six and sort out the handle parts. These aren't going to be perfect, but they should do the trick for such a short time frame, plus it's a fun little project. I'll see about updating here with shots of the mold and casts and such as things get done.

Well this has sort of turned into a project to use the little drips and drabs of some supplies I have lying around here, which makes for some less then ideal situations, but for a quick project like this, it's fine. I had a very small amount of silicone left in the bottom of the small mold making kit I got, so I wasn't able to mold this up quite how I would have liked, as I wouldn't quite have had enough to do the job. So I framed in the claw on its side.

Then I poured in the last of the pink stuff.

Once it cured I went about using the last of some VERY old resin to make up the six castings.

Next up will be preping for paint and sorting out the mounting wires and handles. I hope to get it all together by midnight tomorrow for the screening, so I'd better go to it!

Cheers,

MJC.

Awesome job so far man. I think they look damn impressive regardless of how little time you've had. Keep up the great work!

I'm glad some of you are getting a kick out of these things! I don't know about a run; these are pretty rough due to the short amount of time I've had to spend on them, but perhaps some refinements, a new mold, and some fresh resin could make it happen. We'll just have to see!

Anyway, so I worked up some handles made of scrap wood and used some clothes hanger wire to mount them all together. Then I did a quick aluminum paint job on these guys and here's what I've got:

They're sitting on a print out of the quick "blueprints" I made for them... a sort of full circle type of thing. ;) Oh, and that's just a layer of duct tape on the handles for comfort. And here's a shot of them being worn:

So all in all, a rushed little project, but with some fun results. I'm heading out now to catch the midnight screening tonight and I'll be bringing these along, just for a laugh. I hope the movie is a fun one!

Take it easy,

MJC.

Still excellent work! I'd still say a run AS IS is necessary and leave the clean up to others!!! :lol

Just thinking out loud here!!! Think of all the money to be made in these hard economic times! You would be in a major cashflow profit!!!! :confused

Those came out great! I can't believe that was a rush job!? If you change your mind about doing a run..I'd be in for a set:thumbsup

If there's gonna be rework and clean-up for round two... might as well try to get the accurate measurements, if that's possible, to get things as accurate as possible.

I know they were just effect claws, but I always like the ones in X-1 in the train, where there are these circles cut into the blade near the knuckles.

Given the response you got here for a "rush job", just think what a little refinement would get you.... :love

Regardless, nice job. How'd people react to them in person?
