So my son wants to be a flame trooper for Halloween. I have no problems getting the costume from Target. But the thrower back pack as to go.. So I decided to make him a much better version. I am writing down some ideas. My IDEAL prop would be to have a functioning (not real fire though LOL) thrower.)
I found this

heavy cardboard tube used for pouring concrete columns I figured it would be perfect. I can cut it into two pieces. I already have assorted pvc tubes and joints for the look of it.. for the actual function. here is my thought.. I want to place one of these
(the one hanging from the chain)

I. My idea is if I have one in each tank(upside down) the air will travel down the hose(I will couple the two tanks together into one hose) to the thrower nozel. Where I will transplant the fabric flames and LED for the color. I can extend the on and off switches and swap them out for momentary switches so it only turns on when you pull the trigger...

Does this seem like it will work?

Fairly decent idea actually. Pretty genius. Try it out because this line of hobby's is all about trial and error and learning from mistakes.

You might want to think about replicating the flame effect instead of trying to adapt a premade one.
The fans in those are not very powerful at all, as they don't have to be since the fabric is mounted directly above them.
I would opt to use some over powered fans that can be adjusted with a speed controller.
More powerful fans can also give you a the ability to "make" a longer flame.
Should be fairly cheap to put together.

USAJDM actually does have a good point about the fan. For flames you could use those orange, red, and yellow streamers and tuck them back into the flame thrower when your done with the flame effect that way your not dragging streamers around everywhere and when you want to roast somebody with your awesome flames you can turn the fan back on and have the streamers blow out of the flamethrower and then tuck em back in again when your done.

That was my actual intention. The problem is finding something powerful enough I can install in a tube that is aprox 8" in diameter. (The pack will have at least two tubes) That will be powerful enough to force air down through a pfc tube and flexible hose extension and not lose strength to achieve the effect I want...

The problem is the fans would have to be powered by batteries.. Have any ideas? They would have to be 8 " in diameter and battery powered.

I was thinking about using computer fans. I can get 200 mm (7.65 inches) The specs of the ones I am looking at can take up to 12 volts... What if I were to place two in each tube. One draws in air from the top of the tube and the second (at the bottom) would expel it into the tubing...for the thrower.

any ideas on what I could use?

Look up SLA batteries.
You can find them in all sorts of sizes.
They are heavy, but the smaller ones should be manageable.
Computer fans sound the way to go.
Or possibly fans designed to run of your cars battery.
Might get more air off those.
And to build off alexmiller1's idea, you could reverse polarity on the fans to bring the "streamers" back into the gun.

Thanks for the ideas. I will check out those batteries...

Heres an 8" fan you can look for.
Probably pulls alittle more air then a computer fan.

Heres a SLA battery that would probably work fine for you.
Demensions look like you can hide it in the tanks.
Just remember, the higher the AH, the longer it will run.

I mean the good thing is that I only have to worry about the fans running when he pulls the trigger. So I would thing that the battery would last a long time.. (unless he goes running up and down the street with his finger on the trigger LOL. (even then I will prob install a main switch that has to be flipped to allow the trigger to work)

So I picked up this computer fan.

here are the specs.

do you think a battery setup with 8 AA batteries would be sufficient to run it?? Again it does not have to run consistantly. Just for brief moments when a button is pressed.
