Magneto First Class Final Costume Build

Hiya, new around here, but really interested in costuming.

After seeing X-Men: First Class back when it came out, I knew what I was going to be for Halloween. The plan is to do the helmet body with pepakura (already aquired the files, Dungbeetle's I believe), forehead emblem in Apoxie Sculpt and sew the cloth parts.

Here's what I've done with the helmet so far:

Had some issues with the prongs wanting to go the wrong way so I sliced into some of the side where the lines weren't exactly true and installed this brace.

Hopefully putting resin on the outside will make it rigid enough to keep them in place and I'll remove the brace. If not, I can always cut it out after doing fiberglass.
 
Resin will start after I finish my move. Going from an apartment to a house so I'll actually have a space to do it now and not have to do it on my patio at 3 in the morning because of the Texas heat.

I currently have some Polyester Resin, but after watching Stealth's YouTube tuts, I'm inclined to toss it and get some of the SmoothOn stuff just for health's sake. I don't want to turn my new garage into a hostile environment. It's fine and all to wear a respirator, but I don't think my fiance would like wandering into it accidentally.

I was worried there was a big price difference, but the trial size seems to be about the same size and price as 32 oz. container of Castin' Craft + catalyst I have used before.
 
Which costume are you going for? The jumpsuit or one he wears at the end? I was interested in the one he wears at the end, but can't find any decent reference material.
 
I'm going for the final costume when he's officially Magneto. As for pics, all I've found are lo res images, but it looks like it's just a sort of suit. I may end up seeing it again just to pay closer attention.

Found a good video of the scene w/ the costume. Made some screen caps.
This shows a lot more of the costume than the lo-res pictures I had found before.

  • Boots - I thought initially he was just wearing black shoes, but looks like he has black calf-length boots. I've already got a pair I should be able to use.
  • Pants - looks to be a dark grey or black.
  • Shirt - a dark burgundy/red with flapped pockets, a seam across the chest, and a collar that covers his whole neck. I assume the buttons are covered with the center seam.
  • Gloves - Short black leather gloves.
  • Helmet - duh...:lol
  • Cape - seems to be sort of like a poncho or a hoodless cloak.
 
Can't wait to see where this goes! I'd love to make this as well, maybe after I finish some of my other stuff. And thanks for posting those caps, I've been looking everywhere for some decent pictures. Good luck with your build!
 
The soft parts do look relatively simple. If I can find someone to work with, I was thinking about commissioning someone to sew it.

Looking at it, it appears to have some simple piping in the sleeves. There is also something going on across the chest, where the cape comes down. I can't tell if it's a seam or something under the cape that it attaches to, to keep in in place so it doesn't choke Magneto and lays down correctly. The pants look quite a bit like the trilogy pants.

Of course, for myself, I'll have to hope that someone does a run of the helmet in the junkyard by summer's end.

I don't see the piping you mentioned. I did note the seam across the chest in my run down of the parts above though. As for sewing, I'll either do it or get my fiance to make it for me. As for the pants, it's pretty hard to tell from anything I've seen if they're grey or black. Either way, I'll probably just wear a pair of pants I already own.

Those are basically the same pictues I put up, but full frame. I decided to crop my screen caps to just have Mags in them. But thanks for the extras.
 
They looked higher quality to me. I also tried to attach one of the helmet being worn by someone who worked on the movie, but it didn't work. Have you seen it? And there's a promo pic of him in full costume from the backside, but you've probably seen that one already.

I assume you mean this one. Which I've obviously seen already. :lol I've done ALOT of looking around to get my pictures. If you find anything else, feel free to put them up for me. I'm really interested in something that will show his pants in a better light (maybe the shot of his leg entering the room at a higher res) so I can get the right color.

Check out the sleeves where the arms hang next to the pockets. There's a raised detail... that could be piping, a seam or something under the jacket. It doesn't appear to be a simple crease, because they are symmetrical.

Blast! It's infuriating that the Bluray won't be out until October/ November. Even an action figure would give a better look than these screen grabs.
 
I see now. It's angled and looks to be like the stuff on the chest. Which makes that part make more sense now. It almost seems like some kind of a military dress uniform. Not of a kind I can think of, but it just gives me that feeling that I've seen it somewhere else before.
