Machining, X-files Alien Stiletto build.

I've had a few setbacks. I am switching to more 4140 steel for the internal parts as the aluminum wears too fast.
My question is, why do u not use stainless steel? I dont know much bout metals, but by googling it seems that although 4140 does have good corrosion resistance, it is not even close to certain stainless steels. The guy who made the replica wrote that he used 304 stainless steel. Why not use the same material? I mean, if your building something that should last a long time, then its worth it.

I also made the I.D. of the handle larger, I went from .4219 to .4531. I know a little over .030 doesn't seem like a lot, but in this build it is. I am reworking a few issues after a small disaster with the frame and carriage:
Where did u get the dimensions of the handle anyway?

And yea.. why are u not answering e-mails anymore? :D

Well there are several reasons.
1.) I own a Company, so I do this all day long and have certain scraps left over which are more economical to use in a prototype.
2.) I am sealing it with black oxide and a penetrating agent to prevent rust.
3.) I am not the guy who made the replica you are talking about.
4.) I will change my materials when I begin production, and haven't decided yet on the final materials as this is still a WIP.

The dimensions, I got from screengrabs as I told you many times via numerous email exchanges. You offered dimensions and I told you I had some and yours were close, not sure why you continue to repeat this every time we talk.

Because I run a legitimate business I only respond to clients who are looking for work done. I don't freely give information and pics over email, only via these WIP threads do I share information. That's why I am making this thread, so people can see my work and make their own if they so choose.

Wreckhur is busy with work, i'm actually surprised he takes the time to answer e-mails from non customers!

Keep up the great work mate :)

Because details are important, thats why. I dont continue to repeat it, as this is only the 2nd time, because I just want to figure out how you can get accurate dimensions based on only screencaps from the show? Shouldnt u have something else that is more precise, such as dimensions from a accurate replica, or dimensions from a prop used on the show? I mean it is just well meant advise. The position of the end caps is important, as well as the design of the button, and also the slot where the button is.

U also do know that they used different props in the show, right? When you compare the prop in episode COLONY where the thing first shows up, with for example episode "Two Fathers" in Season 6, youll see the thickness, the end caps, and the button are all noticably different, and this has nothing to do with camera angles. What I wanna say is, if you put so much work into the mechanism, then u should also pay attention to the visual aspect.

If u want accuracy, then I suggest u look at pictures from a piece sold by user "philippes" many years ago, because this is an original screen used piece! The other solution is to look at the replica i posted about, because it seems very accurate as well.

Notice: the version "philippes" sold is an original piece, obviously from the episode Two Fathers, whereas the replica designed in the other link very closely resembles the prop in episode "Colony" (season 2), which has a much larger button, and no pivot for the button. Now just when u think u got it all figured out, then u take a look at episode Talitha Cumi in Season 3, and u notice that this is a 3rd version, neither from Colony nor Two Fathers. The button looks totally off, as well as the end caps. The prop in episode EMILY seems to be a 4th version, since it slightly resembles the one from Two Fathers, but the end caps are different, and there is no pivot for the button. You see... these are the details I am talking about.

My question to u is therefore very simple: Which episode(s) from The X-Files, or which prop/prop-replica, is your version based on?

Well, im a potential buyer. I think it would have been better if u had replied to my email and just said "Sorry, I only post pictures on the forum", instead of ignoring the emails.

Either way, I wish u best of luck. Please dont take my advice the wrong way, cuz I just wanna tell u how important these details are. To an x-files fan like myself, a single action version with an accurate handle is 100x more worth than a double action version with a handle that looks way off compared to the original(s). Now of course its not an issue for a person whos just looking to buy a double-action OTF spike.

Actually you are not a potential buyer. You told me you were conducting nefarious dealings using information I had supplied you with. But I guess you felt it necessary to do what exactly? You were very interested in exact operations I was using, I supplied you that information as you used the guise of buying one of these. Pricing, time to manufacture etc. Then I discovered my details had been plastered over several different sites, which coincidentally was after you asked me not to discuss any conversations we had by email here on the RPF. So I decided to do a build, where everyone would have the chance to see original pics, dimensions, process etc.

All of this was covered in the numerous emails we exchanged. After you told me you were using me I stopped responding to you. If you don't mind I would like for this thread to resume being a WIP thread. Not a game for whatever purposes you have. Please stop emailing me and responding in this thread with already answered questions.

So here are a few pics of the blade and blade holder. Remember the blade is only .070 thick and this blade holder is .1375 thick and tall by 1" long. First pic is milling the blade holder to size.

I actually was a potential buyer, up until this post of yours where u are accusing me of things I never did. Now I wouldnt buy your replica even if it costs only 10 bucks.

U completely misunderstood what i wrote in that email. I said i had been dishonest, but i never mentioned about what. I also said i wasnt interested in buying "at this moment".

Then I discovered my details had been plastered over several different sites, which coincidentally was after you asked me not to discuss any conversations we had by email here on the RPF.
Whoa, this is a complete untruth!! Not one single time did i post anything that we discussed per e-mail, anywhere on the net! Not here, and not on any other forum. It is a complete fantasy, and i dont know what u are trying to achieve. I discussed OTF spike mechanisms on other forums, and building a replica yes, but nowhere did i post anything about what we discussed, much less did i plaster "your details" on any website at all. Youve got quite an imagination. I challenge u to post links and prove what you are saying.

So I decided to do a build, where everyone would have the chance to see original pics, dimensions, process etc.
Your not helping anyone trying to build anything. There are videos on youtube with detailed OTF dual action units taken apart and described in details. There are also drawings on the internet u can find about different OTF mechanisms. What you posted is no help, but actually just showing off. Also when someone asked u about a blueprint u said there is no way u can post that. You see.. I totally respect that, but at the same time u shouldnt pretend like youre helping people build this. Lets not kid ourselves. This is just a show-off thread, and basically advertising for a product.

All of this was covered in the numerous emails we exchanged.
Nope, this is false. The info i gave u in my last post about different props being used in different episodes was never mentioned by me in our e-mail exchanges, not one single time. What I do know one hundred percent tho, is that u didnt know about this info until I provided it in my last post. It is funny how u avoided a very simple question: Based on which episode(s) from the show, or based on which prop (or prop replica), will your version of the stiletto be based on? You dont know the answer to this because u never compared the props used in different episodes. Very simple.

You should actually be thankful for the info i gave you. Cause u see, to someone who sees this object as just a retracting "needle in a tube", the design is pretty much irrelevant. But to an x-files fan with a good eye, they wont fall for any bs, trust me. :D

After you told me you were using me I stopped responding to you.
I was never using u for anything. If that were true, I wouldnt have advised u that your prop should actually cost more than what you had offered. LOL!

If you don't mind I would like for this thread to resume being a WIP thread. Not a game for whatever purposes you have. Please stop emailing me and responding in this thread with already answered questions.
The game is yours, not mine. You have accused me of spreading something about you (?) and posting these details on websites. I LOLed when i read that. There is absolutely no truth in this. Not 0.01 percent.

I have no more questions for you, and I will not respond to you in this thread again, unless of course u continue to post untruths and fantasies.

I also sincerley hope that your steel mechanism wont fall apart like your aluminum version did. Therefore i suggest u should offer at least a one year warranty with the prop. :D

Best of luck.

Looking good Wreckhur!

Ignore the Trolls and the flakes and keep your nose to the grindstone! ;)

Thank you all. Sorry I haven't figured out multi-quote yet or I would thank you each individually.

I really love this community and will give as much as I can back to it, because it has been a shelter for me in the storms of life. It's sad when someone abuses kindness for their own gains on the sacrifices of those that work hard. Obviously the community knows right from wrong as the individual was banned and we can move on with the things we love.

I know this isn't the place for soapboxing so I will keep this short and sweet so I can show you all more of the build.

I started a fledgling company awhile back to make the best props that I can possibly make. Though I am a newcomer, it is because of people like you that I am where I am today. That being said I have received an amazing opportunity to have my products showcased by an insider at SDCC 2014. So I only have 75 days for my partner and I to come up with the requisite items. Unfortunately my time on this project will be greatly reduced for the next few months, however I am not stopping this project. I will deliver on this, so if I disappear for short amounts of time, don't think I am neglecting this.

Once again thank you all!

...hey, I'm in the Seattle area! :) Perhaps I'll run into you sometime...you know, Seattle bein' such a small place & all. ;)

...& I'm with ya'. I love this place. I've found a lot of joy in the pursuit of building fictional artifacts, mostly with inspiration from this forum. Good luck - again - on the build. :D

Damn, I would buy one of these in a heartbeat. I would want a steel blade thought Since it's just a prop in my house and it adds realism.
