Ma.K. master pattern I'm making

Here's the "Working Suit" master I'm building as a last minute thing in time for selling at the the Japanese Wonderfest. Yes, once again, Jason shows something that no one knows/cares about, but it can't all be Star Wars, hehe. I kinda hate showing it in this state, as there's sooo much I have to do still, but eeeh, why not. It's 1/20th scale prototype to what would be the first powered suit in the MaK universe. Apparently, it's basically a Power Loader, in that it was developed for farm and industrial use.

Kow's drawing that I'm using as a guide (it's the suit on the far left):

Engine bits and frame:

Feet (they start out as blobs of Apoxie Sculpt):
P1010893.jpg

Leg bits that I'm basing off of the AFS parts:
P1010894.jpg

Other leg bits. The goal with the legs is to suggest the same internal mechanisms as the AFS has, without armor platings and coverings. So, I have to show pistons externally, and these grey bits will serve as the piston mounts/anchors.
P1010896.jpg

Engine bay sides, with more bits added. When assembled, everything fits well and is densely layered, suggesting all sorts of functionality/purpose, like a car's engine bay.
P1010898.jpg

Pretty proud of this! Figure sculpt so far (this took about half a week, lol). Need to finish the glasses and do the headset/helmet.
P1010899.jpg

One of the forearms (scratch built, baby):
P1010901.jpg

One of the upper arms (also scratched):

Other forearm (scratched, wheeee):

Leg bits need one more round of putty:

Back pad for the pilot:

Guts:

Everything fits so far, and I will sculpt up the pilot padding/front plates next:
P1010913.jpg

This shows how the side plate details nestle in:
P1010915.jpg

And this shows how the side plates will socket into the main engine and pivot forward a little, registering with that forward outer plate's lip and ensuring a 90º position:

Now I have to sculpt up the torso section, ensuring it mates with the legs and arms and back pieces... I have added Apoxie Sculpt spacers for the legs/groin area, and I'm pretty satisfied with the positioning of everything. Arms and legs are temporarily tacked into place.

Photoshop trickery shows how the two radiators will be stacked on the back. They will mount to the engine via the bottom radiator, and the top one will have a couple of support rods mating it to the bottom one.
P1010942.jpg

Ta-Da! New arms and lower legs to bring it closer to the illustration. Forearms are thinner, the left one isn't as long, and the upper arms will be fleshed out with flexible coverings/armor plating! I re-did most of the scratched parts, tossing the old ones away- am I in the club now? ;)

Compare to how it looked two days ago - shazam!
P1010945a.jpg

Still needs cleanup, but there ye be.

The rod tapers. So sue me ;)

Here's the latest as of tonight (didn't get to work on it much this weekend, what with all the errands and Christmas light hanging, lol). Engine tubular frame now has welded seams (which will be cleaned a little), radiator assembly, and the muffler/exhaust, which I gave a VW Beetle vibe to.
P1010957.jpg

Legs have actuators - need to add the mount points for it. Arms will have something much more subtle to join the bulky forearms to the back plates, implying a strong exoskeleton - kinda like ribbed vertical lines you see on Kow's drawing.
P1010958.jpg

Upper arms and elbows are done. I need to add the elbow plating, aforementioned exoskeleton ribs, and then the shoulder pad area (which will also nicely hide the fact that I cut down a couple corners on the plating to get the look I wanted, hehe.

Wow! Looks top notch. So it's kind of a proto-AFS?
I like a lot of the MaK designs, but I don't know a lot of the 'story' that goes along with them.

I am getting more and more into this stuff everytime you post......you may hook me on this stuff yet....looks awesome
mike

Thanks! Mike - wanna cast it? :p

Thanks!

Leg progress - (I have since added knee plates):

Mapping out waist mechanics:

P1010985.jpg

Legs then got their flexible coverings and the waist and chest plating was started:
P1010995.jpg

Right side - that horizontal bar will serve to keep the back connected to the front - the goal is to make the pilot look like he's sitting IN the suit, not wearing it with suspenders or like a backpack.
P1010999.jpg

From below, you can see how they will join up, parts-wise.
P1020002.jpg

Left side:
P1020001.jpg

The new plating (like a suit of armor) forms a wider and thicker neck collar. Once the shoulder plates are sculpted, this will make more sense:
P1020005.jpg

As of last night, I changed the arms again - they will mount at the shoulders and will come assembled from there to the wrists (joined the upper and lower arms)

Of all the crazy Mak stuff they've put out I'm surprised that a cool version like this hasn't.

Great stuff.

Nick

Wow, Jason, that's some fantastic work. I knew you were a great model builder, but I had no idea your sculpting skills were so advanced too.

Will you be documenting the molding process as well?

Sean

Thank you guys! I took sculpture classes, but it's been over 10 years since I really flexed those muscles. I'm rusty, but it's all coming back to me.

I'm having someone else cast this, so there won't be much to document ;)

How do you like working in the Apoxie stuff?

I've always used super sculpy for most any project but a self hardening clay is definately useful in situations like this where baking the clay would harm delicate styrene pieces.

Do you feel like the 2-3 hour window is enough time to get the the sculpt where you want without feeling rushed or having to compromise anything?

Nick

Yeah, I do like it - with regards to the working time, I just mix a small enough amount, knowing that it's fiddly delicate work and that I'd waste a large batch. I do have a couple other models nearby that can get the extra Apoxie Sculpt bits, so nothing goes to waste!

_____

Headgear - 1st layer is done. He will get the outer shell that includes the right earcup tomorrow.

Gotta add wires and some more detailing to torso too.

I think we have another award winner here!

Dude! I had no idea how much of this was scratch-built & hand sculpted.

Thow art truly a Greeble Master...
