Luna's Ultimate Spider-Man Build, Orhadar Print. [Pic Heavy]

Re: Lunaman's 2013 Halloween Costume Contest Entry--Ultimate Spider-Man

I've been following your Spidey stuff for a few months now, and I must say (what has already been said a thousand times over), this is a seriously impressive suit. Yes, the pattern itself is really nice, but I'm talking about the actual construction of the whole suit, and the ingenious improvisation.

I especially adore what you did with the zippers. I've been trying to figure out how / where to put zippers on my eventual suit. I saw all the progress pictures you posted, but would you happen to have any better shots of the zipper location(s)? I can't really tell if it goes a) straight from the armpit, across the posterior waist area and up to the other armpit, or b) from where the blue starts on the under-forearm, and continues to follow that seam across the waist and to the other forearm.

One last zipper question... Do they inhibit your ability to stretch any which way you like? My first Spider was one of those officially licensed deluxe Halloween suits, and its zipper (which was across the shoulderblades) didn't let me stretch my arms out in front of me very far.

Thanks for the compliments. I can't take credit for the location of the zippers, they just copy what was done on the film suits for the first 3 Spider-Man movies, the basic orhadar pattern is built on the pelting used for the Raimi movie suits.

The zippers start at the armpit and run vertically down to the belt, where they turn and go across the lower back. You can get a better look at it in the photo below.
On the first 3 films they used one long zipper that ran the whole distance from armpit to armpit, my suit has two shorter zippers than each run half of the distance and meet in the belt at the back.
The zippers here do not restrict movement, but if you don't account for stretch in the seam that goes straight up the spine or have enough slack in the mask zipper (if you choose to have one), then those can restrict your movement. On the first "Amazing Spider-Man" film the mask zipper was not placed in the back center like my suit, but slightly off to the side at an angle to allow better stretch and mobility overall.

Where did you buy the invisible zippers?
I bought mine at International Silks & Woolens, but you can buy them at any local fabric store. :)

In other news, my suit's featured in this interesting music video/cosplay compilation that was just put up. I think it's the first video footage of me moving around in the suit that I've seen, other than a tiny bit I did in a short film a while back. I show up a little after the 1:15-minute mark and again around 2:50.

Damn, that costume is FREAKING INCREDIBLE in motion!! Seriously great work!

You've also really got those Spidey moves down, which makes it even more epic

I've been a little stressed and frustrated working on a new costume project lately, but I had a chance to throw this suit on again the other day (I was taking some pics wishing some kids a Happy Holidays from Spidey) and it reminded me of why costuming is fun and inspiring. So I snapped a couple extra shots with the self-timer just for me. I really do love this suit. :) This hobby is supposed to be fun, right?

By chance, I was browsing a used bookstore the day before yesterday and I found a copy of Ultimate Spider-Man: Learning Curve, which was my favorite anthology in the series and the trade paperback that inspired me to make this suit. It covers Ultimate Spider-Man issues #8-13, and reading through it again on the plane-flight home for the holidays reminded me of why Spider-Man was so important to me growing up. I was 11 when I first read this story arc, and it stuck a chord with me that went a little deeper than the spidey cartoons of my youth and the classic "Amazing Spider-Man" comics that my brother and cousins had handed down to me that first introduced me to the character. It was "my" version of Spider-Man. More than the Raimi movies, more than the video games, it was this contemporary expression of the character that I felt closest to.
As I flipped through issue #8, I came across this panel, a scene from one of Peter's nightmares about the death of his uncle Ben. I hadn't read the comic in years, but I knew immediately that this was the image I had in mind when I decided to take on the costume project. This was the inspiration.

Pretty cool to see. :)

I want to thank everyone who helped make this project possible: the wonderful artists and craftsmen that contributed their talents directly, as well as the community of builders who shared the all of the information and discussions that allowed me to research, take on the project and see it through to the end.

Also, I never mentioned the belated results of this year's costume contest. When the rulings finally came in after some delays, I did not officially place or receive any awards, but I was third in my category in the popular vote, out of 44 entries, thanks to the generous votes of many talented forum members, including a vote from the eventual winner of the judge's pick, rpenatx, and I'm deeply honored. Thank you to everyone who participated or voted; I'm touched to have been granted the unofficial bronze distinction. :lol
The real praise, as always, should go to the craftspeople whose artistry is on display in this project: namely, Orhadar, TJack, and TrophyWife. They made possible my dreams when I was willing to bring their talents together and spend some quality time with glue and threads and marker fumes. I'm very very pleased with the result.

All the best,

Did you ever consider making the soles red so that the costume would be more comic book accurate?

Thought about it, but I'd already taken some liberties with the shape of the eyes and the using the design of the spiders from Orhadar's pattern instead of Bagley's emblems, and the black sole was guarenteed to fit. If I were to go with red soles, I would use something like this product, but the color there is too saturated compared to my suit and wouldn't match it perfectly.

Love the Christmas update!
7 months later and the extra detailing you did is still showing!
Very nice.
How many times have you worn it so far to conventions and events and such? 10? 20?
This is one of my favorite prints out there, and I'm using your shoe method (although with aesics) for my own suit.

Thank you very much! :) I was feeling sentimental.

Haha, more like a half-dozen times, could only afford a couple of conventions this year. Visited a children's hospital, did a short film, set up a couple meetings and photo ops with people. Standard stuff, a public outing every month or so.

Cheers, I've discussed it with you in PM at this point (sorry for missing your message on this thread here). I'm looking forward to the results of your project, you seem very passionate about it!

Best,
