Luke's X-wing Pilot Helmet - Screencaps/Reference request

Hi Guys

I'll soon be starting a build on a Luke Pilot Helmet. Can anyone help me out with any hi-def screencaps or reference pictures. I've collected some stuff from the usual sources just trying to get as much together as I can before my kit arrives (thanks Bradleyfett/Delucks Designs).

This will be my first Rebel pilot helmet so any assembly/painting tips are very welcome.

Cheers

Thanks guys

Yours looks great Yorkie, are the ear protecters from a pair like you'd use with power tools or big headphones? Also did you use automotive pinstriping, if so how does it handle the tight curves?

The ear cups and pads are from a USAF pilot helmet- these can be bought as separate items ( so you don't have to buy an entire helmet) and crop up on eBay- do a search for HGU or SPH ear cups.
The pin striping can be bought in RC model shops and come in a variety of colours and thicknesses. It's thin and flexible so will cope with some pretty tight curves.
Another tip is to buy some Tamiya clear orange spray (TS73) for the visor, if like mine it wasn't orange enough (not shown on the pics, it's some I've used on my current build). The spray gives a beautiful deep orange tint just like the movie versions and it sprays great.

I'll probably get one helmet/decals combo too ..
Here's some starters for you ..

Great caps. Thanks for the link. Just got my helmet kit, and these pics will be extremely helpful.

Interesting though. From these caps, it looks like Luke has two different helmets.

This one shows the black and yellow stripped pattern on the side of the mohawk, and the eyeball thing toward the back.

This one shows the red mohawk.

Found that interesting.

Three, actually. In the first shot of Luke in the cockpit, the Rebel birds...

EDIT:

appear to be blue. On further viewing, Luke's birds are always red. (There is one shot in the cockpit where they do look blue, but maybe it's a trick of the light, or just the outline color.) It doesn't make sense that Luke's weathered helmet would have ever been blue if his newer helmet was red.) It was all the other guys with new helmets whose blue birds turned red once they got into space. (Adywan fixed them.)

So...never mind. :unsure

Well, the birds were supposed to be color-changing, right? As an indicator of fuel levels?

Also, in the first shot, I think that is a helmet he was delivering to his friend or taking back to the quartermaster as it didn't fit.

Anyway, I wonder what the real story is behind the helmet? Who's was it? Did Luke kill someone to get it? I mean, hhe had just landed, was that supposed to be a helmet he had with him all along?
I love all the markings and wonder what they represent, except that it's not Luke's accomplishments unless they have some killer droid helmet painter that "customizes your helmet in minutes, while you wait!"

Dang, I still want one of those helmet kits!

Looking forward to pics of your build!

I found my new signature. Thanks Vaderman. That was great.

I also recommend getting vinyl pinstriping from model shops. I used it even for the black stripe around the "rebel bird" logo.
An alternative would be cutting strips of self-adhesive vinyl. It is found usually in 1 1/2 feet wide rolls in paint/builders supply stores/home decoration stores. I used this for the grey stripe on the side of the helmet because I could not find any pinstriping tape of the right width and colour.

We're talking about the Rebel Alliance here. Everything is a hand-me-down.

QM: "That fit? Close enough. You probably won't be bringing it back anyway."

(Maybe Luke, being the FNG, didn't rate a shiny new one.)

Thanks for the comments

The more I look at screencaps the more I think I'm going to give handpainting a go for that SA shonkey look.

Looks like I'll have plenty more research time on this, christmas and snow has pretty much killed Royal Mail!

I got a set of decals from Delucks Designs they are awsome, if your after a set head over to the junkyard and check them out.

Yeah I picked up the same a few weeks ago, very good! Still how are you going to handle the black piping that goes around areas of the helmet?

I'm going to try hand painting them. To me it looks like the real ones where hand painted.

Not to detract from how good everything looks on screen but the closer I look into Star Wars props the sloppier I realise they where, I guess those guys new exactly the minimum amount of time and effort it would require to get these to look good enough as fast and cheaply as possible. I think you just start to love them more for all there flaws.

Yeah no kidding LOL You notice how crooked the yellow and black hazard stripes are just above the visor on the mohawk?
