Luke's ANH D-Ring - Please put your research here!

Where is the best place to get the most accurate ANH D-Ring? What are the best pictures available of the original?

Thanks,

VP

This is an area which needs work. So far most people just eyeball it or don't bother trying, which means that so far there is no consensus.

A full-on research thread would be a good thing, I think. :confused

I think the consensus was that the old EDC part was the most accurate. There is a good photo of one on the posw. However, this part was just some folded metal with a D-ring. I picked up a few online awhile back for just a few bucks.

Its the real downside to the ANH saber if you ask me... the D-ring is quite plain, and to me doesn't quite have the right look. To be fair though, we never see the thing on screen anyway.

I think there is a production photo of Hamill in Ben's hut holding the saber so you can see the bottom. Anyone have that shot?

I've changed the title of the thread. With hope, this will turn into the definitive thread. Here's what I have so far. I believe everything came from the RPF at one time or another.

I just buzzed through that thread. Although it may have been a good reference at one time, it's very stale with nearly every picture link broken.

Perhaps someone can add pictures here that pertain to the ANH D-Ring that may have been in that thread?

Well if you don't want to read then that thread will not help.

Pictures may be missing, but all the research on the ANH saber, including the discovering of the seventh grip, and the size, style and position of the d-ring is archived there.

I don't disagree that there is a lot of research and information there, on many of the sabers, but specific info about the type of D-Ring, or concrete info about it's attachment on the Luke ANH sabre is not.

The seventh grip and approximate size can be easily deduced from the pictures I reposted above. My measurements might be slightly off because of the highlight bloom in the source scan. It's possible that someone may have a better scan that would yield more accurate results.

In the meantime, does anyone know who markets a D-Ring where the bracket is 3/4", or just over and the D-Ring at it's widest is approximately 1-1/8"?

DonÂ’t forget that the thickness of the wire needs to be specÂ’d too, and not all D-rings have the same shape.

Take your pic. I think #2 is the likeliest candidate.

Here's mine. Purchased waaaay back from a now banned member.

Sorry for the quick and dirty picture.
This D-ring's good enough for me.

ProbeDroid, I agree, #2 looks pretty good. Where did you get it, or do you have any for sale?

Thanks,

VP

I know this is ANH Luke d-ring off topic, but I thought it was pretty cool anyways.

This is a screencap from the HD tv version of ESB.

You can actually read the Graflex lettering on the bottom of the Saber (New York).

You could actually make sure your d-ring was in a screen accurate position, assuming your endcap was attached in the same location when the bottom tube was screwed in place.

Believe it or not, I cut two off them off a gym bag one of my neighbors had tossed out. Was walking to the train to go to work, saw it in the trash, snip, snip and two nice Ds. :)

VP,

These are some D-rings I found for my ANH (OBI :) ) saber:

The upper left one is the one I used and is similar to "#2", but it's more squared off at the bottom. I bought it from an Ace Hardware store. Right of that is a zinc plated ring from Home Depot. The stainless steel one came with a recently purchased pommel/handwheel. The lower left and lower middle came from a different Ace Hardware store (the middle one is 5/8"). The lower right ring came from a JoAnn fabrics store.
