Lifesize ED-209 Build. NOW WITH EVEN MORE ED on p.23!!!

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

The next video is live. In this one I show the vacforming process:

Yesterday I made a bit more progress on the molds for the toes and the shoulder flap:

The mold parts all need a bit of cleanup in order to be ready to pull parts:

While that was going on, I also had Lopez cut out more armpit parts:

So the armpit gimbals are almost ready for vacforming:

Last but not least, the first cast of the little hydraulic rocker arm for the upper legs is out of the molds:

So that's that.

More progress to come today. Stay tuned...

If you've neglected to keep your neighbours abreast of your project, I suspect there may be a few raised brows of curiosity and surprise when you put ED together in the open air ...

I don't think the neighbors can be fazed by any of these things anymore. A couple of years ago there were 8-foot Space Marines walking around out there for a few days. A couple of years before that it was a squad of Halo Spartans. Nowadays it's just another crazy thing coming out of the chicken barn next door.

We've been talking about strapping the finished ED209 down onto a car trailer and driving through town to get video of the public reaction. That might be interesting.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

When I grow up I want to be you.

In that case, the trick is to not grow up at all. It's harder than you might think.

I just wanted to add my congrats on this project thorssoli. I'm loving seeing ED-209 come together and by the way, you're a natural on camera.

Thanks. I always feel weird whenever they point the camera at me. There's an overwhelming desire to stick a finger in my nose the whole time...

UPDATE:
Yesterday I was focused on another project for most of the day, but I made progress on ED's elbow prototype:

I also managed to set the main body back upright and put it on a workstand:

Today I'll be vacforming a few more parts and hopefully making progress on ED's face.

Stay tuned...

Assuming this awesome build will be in his presentation(idle) stance/pose, will it have some minimal articulation so its more posable?

Killer killer build. Love all the work you do man. Been following this mostly while at work. It's like an oasis in the madness at my workplace. I come home, see you've updated and then save it for the next workday.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Fiberglass.

Gotcha, yea I figured you would stick with fiberglass, just was curious if you were going to explore in other options.

These guys used a fabric material that turned out pretty good.

Will you be doing the dome like the movie prop, or the stop motion puppet?

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Thanks for the tut, always informative and cool to see the results also. Keep up the good work, it's going to rock:cool

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Will ed speak and do the 'resting sound'? It'd be really cool if you could have a continuous resting sound then a sound activated 'you have 20 seconds to comply' when people pass him.

What this guy said.

That looks pretty good, but it seems pretty clear that the screen-used prop just used fiberglass. I'm aiming to have the finished dome be the same texture as the full-sized prop and the same shape as the stop motion miniature.

Will ed speak and do the 'resting sound'?

At the very least, I think I can do this.

UPDATE:

Yesterday was a vacforming day:

I assembled the first copy of the leg rail:

Still plenty more work to do in that department:

Stay tuned...

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Every time I see you using that vac table it reminds me that I need to build my own. Those look great.

Yes you do. I don't know how I ever got on without one.

UPDATE:
Yesterday Lopez whittled out the last layer of armpit gimbal parts:

I barely remembered to take any photos of the other work that was done until much later in the evening when my friend Matt showed up to lend a hand.

Here I am backfilling some of the cheek ridges with expanding foam:

And rough-shaping them with a knife and body rasp:

This guy's going to be huge:

In other news, my article about vacforming parts is now live at MAKE Magazine's website. Give it a once-over and let me know what you think.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

You really are a natural in front of the camera. You should definitely keep doing videos, its good enough to air on tv.
