Licensed Serenity Stuff!

Yeah, the Mal is looking pretty good so far... nice straight casting. My only criticism with the cold-cast method is that it's hard to get a true metal "sheen", but I'm hoping they'll be able to sort that out. It is a prototype after all.

The news that the grip frame and trigger/guard components are pure aluminium is VERY good to hear. Those are the parts you handle most and having real metal there together with wood grips will add much to the feel of the thing. Kudos to QMX for putting serious thought into things like that. :thumbsup :thumbsup

I just LOVE this shot. I don't know why, but it tickles me something fierce to see how the barrel is sort of bolted into place.

And did you catch the bit about the manufacturing switch? That explains the delays, and frankly, judging from the pictures of that prototype, it looks like it was the right move. Now stand back while I clear leather.

Ruh roh Raggy. Based on what they were saying before, I was thinking my Philippes Mal recast pistol was going to blow their out of the water, but now they've gone and added metal parts.... :p Can't wait to get this one, hope it's as SOON as they say it will be.

Also, I'm digging the blueprints, but I hate the idea of having to race to get them, but ah well.

And yet another....

QMx let out a PDF preview of the Serenity Blueprints (it was over at Whedonesque and on Serenitystuff.com. Here's a link: http://blog.quantummechanix.com/insider_im...ueprints_bg.pdf )

Anyway, these things are nice. With a capital N. The PDF does a better job of explaining the details of each sheet, but check out this spread of most of the sheets:

It also seems that "Black Market Beagles" will be one of the outlets, at least for a limited supply: http://blackmarketbeagles.com/blog7/2007/0...market-beagles/ .

My only complaint is that it doesn't tell me where I can get my own radion core, gorrammit.

Blue prints look cool, I wish they had put something like that in the visual companion. The only thing I dislike about them is the price...way out of my price range. :(

am I missing something or is there a mystery room that doesnt fit in the blueprints? I expertly traced the steps from the opening scene in the movie in red, after the engine room, the go down a single flight of stairs and into the medical bay. Whats with the room outlined in blue?

Can't see your pics Rob.
Is it just me, or is everyone wondering why the mule is on the second level in the cargo bay?
Is this where it's kept? maybe I just never paid attention to the movie enough.
I'm loving the prints though, they're looking great.

If you read through the PDF, they went back to the original designers of the ship (Tim Earls) and the designer for Serenity (Geoff Mandel) and they fleshed out the rest of the ship to fit the original intent. They make a point of saying that they worked to get the insides to fit into the outside in as "real" a way as possible.

That said, I'm not sure there's any conflict there - maybe just a staircase that's a little longer.

Mxlplx - I think the hover mule is just stored near the ceiling of the big cargo bay.

And robstyle - I always wanted to know what they kept in the nose. Thanks.

I added a link to the picture, here it is too: http://i14.tinypic.com/2rh9z04.gif

The mule was on chains and hoisted to the second level to clear the floor. You can see it hoisted up in the film a couple times.

Water storage, water reclamation, all that good stuff they never needed to show. You can see the tanks.

Anyone gone through the press releases that came out with the backgrounder? Some new additions to their line that might include some interesting (and potentially make-my-wallet-hate-me) stuff:

Quantum Mechanix Inc. announces new division to focus on handcrafted replicas
Artisan Series returns to roots of prop collecting by connecting collectors and master model makers

March 28, 2007, Collegeville, PA – Quantum Mechanix Inc. (QMx), a privately held developer of licensed, high-quality entertainment replicas, today announced a new division that will focus on the creation of replicas handcrafted by the top model makers in the industry.

Focusing on the personal touch that used to be a hallmark of prop collecting, the Artisan Series will move beyond what is possible with manufactured replicas to create objects of unsurpassed detail and refinement for the most demanding collectors. Each piece will be handmade by well-known model masters and will be signed by each artist.

-----

It lists the properties that it may include (BSG, Serenity, etc.). I have no idea, but I'm most interested in seeing what hand-made props they might do for Serenity. I'd love to see some of the Operatives' readout pads, or even a small set of Blue Sun products. (Although honestly, I'm voting for the LoveBot).

Some other stuff clipped from the release:

-----

Our product lines are divided into several major areas:

• QMx Replicas – Precision recreations of props and scale models. The properties recreated in QMx's core lineup will generally be the most iconic and therefore will be manufactured in the largest quantities.

• QMx Press - Recreations of paper-type props seen in science fiction TV and films. This category includes technical blueprint sets of famous sci-fi spacecraft, technical manuals and character and vehicle posters.

• QMx Artisan Series - Handmade models of props and vehicles. These items are produced by a specially selected group of professional prop-makers. Edition sizes are generally very limited.

• QMx Space - Precision replicas of NASA and Soviet/Russian-flown hardware and manned spacecraft.

The Serenity blueprints are the first out of the gate for the the QMx Press area, so that speaks well of it. I'm stoked about that last one. Don't know what they might produce, but dammit, I want my own Sputnik.
