I was very lucky to find one of the licensed Aragorn Dusters which were made by Legendary Heroes when Fellowship came out. I didn't expect this to be part of my costume this year, as I couldn't afford to have one made yet, but this was a very nice and affordable option. Up front, I know I have a few zippers to take out (front and cuffs). It's got the whipstitching detail at the shoulders and waist - but it's the wrong stitch. I'd like to order some leather cord from Tandy and replace that with baseball stitch. Any tips? I don't know the stitch, and if I can't learn to do it properly, I can always just go around each side separately - the stitch is just decorative - but I'd like it to be right if I can make it properly.
I'm also going to let out the hems at the end of the sleeves and the bottom of the coat and fray them... Weather the leather... Bring the split sides up the waist (they end just above the knee now, which isn't too useful for the sword).
The coat's not perfect, but it's a good start to work from. I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone else who's altered one of these.
