Leather help anyone?

Ok folks.....finally made it to Tandy this afternoon. Such pleasant folks. And what a nice store. The lady there took the time to help me out and answer all my questions. I should've been a little more prepared, like bringing photos of my project and such, but she showed me a few pieces that look good. One was a "double shoulder" (is that right?) piece that was 9/10ox I believe (it has the striations from the wrinkles which is fine), and the other is the "Side piece" (is that correct?) which was 7/8oz (or was it the other way around? Anyway, I felt they were both the same feel, and pretty much what I'm looking for. I'll be going again on Saturday and bringing a few photos and a sample piece. Thanks again for turning me on to it Erika. ;-)

No problem Anthony,
glad they treated you well.
Now don't blame me when you are laying down a couple hundred every time you go ;).

I still think 7/8 oz is going to be too thick/heavy for you.
Once you start adding in the hardware and all the multiple pieces, after an hour your shoulder is going to be killing you.

Oh and they are going to try to push you to get one of the memberships to 'get more discounts'.
Honestly, for you right now I don't think its worth it as you really don't need that much leather for your project.

If I didn't have an appt saturday morning I would say I would meet your there.

Very nice work. I feel very lucky that I live only about 20 minutes from Oregon Leather Co. I've been dealing with them for over 30 years, since my first SCA project. They have some great bins of scrap leather sold by the pound in the store, so I've seldom had to buy large hides for most of my projects.Tandy is closer to me, but I only go there in an extreme emergency for small stuff. OR Leather also has a great hardware and tack section in their saddle shop upstairs. I don't ever remember to take pictures, but these were taken by someone else of me many years ago, not the best but the only ones I have online right now. The fighting shield is hand tooled by me. Also made the armor, etc.

Wow some really usefull stuff in there... I always wanted to try out leather... But first I need to find out which is the right leather in Brazil... I want to try out making those Roman armors... with the musculare shape... I seen this video on youtube were the person heat treaten the leather then put it over an manekin and start pushing with some circular tool so it stretchs and takes the shape while hot... but I guess the only way to really find out is to try my self right ^_^...
But if anyone has any good material for me to read I would sure be very grateful
