Latex Paint

I know this has been covered before but I can't find the answer in the archives.

When painting a latex mask I know a coat of prosaide is advised first then painted with acrylic paints mixed with latex.

The question is what are the rough mix ratios for airbrushing?

Mix prosaide with what to thin?

Acrylic paint mixed with latex mixed with distilled water but to what ratios. I believe its 25%:25%:50%

Thanks

Sounds like you're mixing two techniques.

One - use a PAX paint which is a mix of prosaide and liquitex acrylics. I mix by eye on this but usually about 30% prosaide, 50% paint and 20% thinner (water... though I like Liquitex airbrush medium as a thinner). Alternatively, some people spray on a layer of prosaide and then follow with thinned liquitex paints.

Two- use a latex/paint mix. Again, I mix by eye but usually it's about 40% paint, 40% latex and 20% thinner. (I vary that based on the thickness of the latex and naturally for airbrushing you'll need to thin further)

People all have their own ratios and a lot of us do this stuff by "feel" so don't get too attached to my numbers.

Also, a lot of people only use these for their basecoats and then use acrylic inks thinned with alcohol for detailing and such (depending on the project).

I prefer to use a chip brush or sponge brush to lay on my base coat rather than an airbrush but if you're using an external mix brush you should be OK.

Hope that's a little help.

I also use a chip brush and sponge to lay down my basecoat, i usually clean the mask first with a bit of acetone or isopropyl alchohol (99 % alchohol) to get rid of any clay residue.
