Lack of costumers at theaters?

The last time I saw anyone over the age of 13 dressed in an actual costume to go see a movie in a theater was for Revenge of the Sith, and even then it was only a handful of people wearing inexpensive off-the-shelf costumes. The next closest was at each of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but they were little kids with cardboard pirate hats and plastic eyepatches.

I am currently sitting at the almost draft house bar waiting for a showing of Monty Python's Holy Grail. I chose not to dress the part due to ferrying my kids around all day. There is a group here in costume and I am jealous. More fun in costume.

Cheers

Sebastian

I recall an incident at a local theater when Phantom Menace premiered. The chain was told to put restrictions on groups attending in costume, allegedly by the studio.

most of the theaters in my area will not allow any types of masks or helmets to be worn in the theater, for fear of something bad happening...

take care,
Tommy

I think the prequels were the last time around here. The big theater that all the costumers used to go too is such a dive now that it's mostly gang members and teenagers that go there. I don't think the other theater is big on costumers but I haven't got to any openings in a while.

Going to the movies in costume should be so much fun, even if a movie turns out to be garbage it still might of been worth going because of "that crazy group of people in costumes".

Seems now days for the most part going to the movies is a dull affair.

After the events that happened in Colorado last night, Id be surprised if most movie chains dont implement a zero tolerance policy on costumes. The guy had a bulletproof vest, riot helmet, and gas mask. That sounds like many costumes here.

and something did

that was certainly some ominus foreshadowing there considering the time of your post

That's exactly what I'm thinking. I imagine that soon movie theaters will be like most retail stores & malls around here -- no masks allowed. And I'm sure that will apply to costumes in general, especially those that resemble armor. So, definitely no Batmen or Darth Vaders allowed.

Well that was disturbingly creepy.

Yeah... wow... ominous, disturbing, creepy...

AMC Theatres:
"UPDATE - FRIDAY 4:45PM CST: Contrary to media reports, costumes are not banned, but we will not admit guests with face-concealing masks and we will not allow fake weapons in the buildings. We want all our guests to feel comfortable at our theatres and we will be closely monitoring."

The guy wasn't wearing a costume. He went into the theater in normal street clothes, opened the back emergency exit and propped it open. He then came back through the emergency exit in body armor, riot gear, and armed.

BANNING COSTUMES WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED THIS

I guess it all depends on where you are and what theater and the person dressing up and the movie. I mean, when I went to FSU's Student Life Cinema to watch The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, one student was there dressed as Arthur Dent (including PJs and towel). The only other time I've seen someone dressed up as a film character at a theater was when I went and saw Back to the Future at AMC a couple of years ago in October (there were a couple of people there dressed as Marty, maybe one '55 Doc Brown). I can say that was those have been the only times I've seen someone dressed in costume to see a movie. Both of them were in medium/big cities like Tallahassee and Orlando. So, there's a lot of factors when it comes to costumers in theaters.

I was planning to wear my UDR TDK jacket to tonight's showing but after the events at Aurora and AMC's announcements, I'm not going to risk AMC security giving me and my gf a hard time over a replica jacket.

My best thoughts to the survivors and those affected by this tragedy.

It would be a shame if they banned costumes, Last night at the preimere for TDKR, there was a bunch of people in homemade Batman costumes, though they weren't the best, it still cool to see people who are really enthusiastic about it. I think that's awesome.

We actually helped the theater out in costume for the premiere and were allowed in free to one of the non-sold out showings. There was a fantastic showing to help out the theater, but those outside were dressed in mainly Party City Batman masks. A few full costumes sprinkled through out.

I was very proud of this town after waking up yesterday morning. Everything went off without a hitch. People were civil, having fun and generally excited to see costumed Batman characters. All were polite.

Stating again and again, he went and GOT the riot gear. This "calling himself the Joker", seems an after thought to me. Or something the cop got out of him to create some sort of reason for all of this. Barely anyone wants to just believe he was UNSTABLE.

Until this whole thing dies down, I think the only way you'll be able to go in full costume with masks and face paint, would be to contact the theater and work with them about it. Ask to be THEIR face characters.
