KuhnGlobal Reds Two and Five....

In late January, I started a Mike Salzo Hero X-wing for Kurt. I've been commissioned to build Reds Two and Five ( Wedge and Luke ).

Right now, as the photos show, I've finished the engine cans and the R2 strip and am working on the main fuselage. The engine cans were weathered using pastels and a 50/50 water/Craft Barrel Flat Black wash applied with a brush and then blown with a straw. The speckling comes from the use of an old toothbrush and

The afterburners have actual red cellophane gels added behind the heat sink detail just as the studio models did.

I removed the thicker material in the engine cans with the Dremel so that the turkey feathers looked appropriately thin.

EDIT: IMAGES REMOVED. RED TWO UNDERGOING REWORK.

Thanks for sharing your methods.

No problem. They're all pretty easy. Best advice is to experiment, experiment, EXPERIMENT.

:thumbsup "I like your 2 models, they are very nice". :thumbsup

:) Great job so far Bob.

Looks very nice. I'm still unclear about how to get that stippled look on the X-wing. Do you use the "flick paint with a toothbrush" approach or something different? I love the way it looks.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread. I've been literally laid up with the flu the past 4 days and pretty much bed-ridden.

To answer your question, yes... I just ruffled a finger along the loaded bristles of a toothbrush after first flicking off the excess on a drop cloth. Very old, but effective technique for this sort of thing. Thanks for the compliment.

And thank you, Gold Leader for the humorous compliment. :thumbsup

I'm hoping to resume work on Red Two tomorrow. I was hoping to keep pace with REL on his OUT-STANDING build up of Biggs' Bird ( Red Three ), but that wouldn't have been possible even if I was healthy this week.

Great progress reports there - thanks. Any lighting plannned?

Too bad about the flu - lot of that going around - one of the schools in my area
had a quarter of the kids sick one day last week. hope you get better soon -

No lighting for this one, nor for Red Five or REL's Red Three as all three of these T-65s along with some up and coming TIE fighters will be used in a Death Star Trench diorama. I'll follow REL's lead and use day-glo paints to simulate lit cockpit controls, however.

Yeah... this is a bad season, that's for sure. My own kids are pulling thru nicely and today is the best I've felt in days, thank you.

Sorry to hear that, I had a cold or something all last week too it sucks. I hate being sick.

Update...

Red Two is shelved for now. It's had issues which will require a bit of reworking... so I've gone forward with Red Five...

Just a little 'tease' and then blackout for awhile...

Two of Red 5's engine cans. Just done today...

First pic? On the test stand...LOL.

* Please remember I'm still tweaking the fit and finish here... so if something's missing or wrong... I'm taking notes and WILL fix it.
