Kroenen Sandstorm Mask

Here is my newest piece. Kroenen's Sandstorm Mask.

I made the straps, lenses and the leather throat guard by studying Sideshow's ninja mask. This mask was made by Double Secret Creations. I also weathered the hell out of the mask using acrylic washes and dry brushing techniques. I am very pleased with the end result. My Venetian Mask is on the way as well :lol so will post my updated lineup once it is in hand.

Looks good. Just wish that DSC weren't blatant recasters otherwise I'd be tempted to get their Sandstorm myself - http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=63572

What did you use for lense material in the end?

Throat guard turned out nice. Wish I had a Sideshow ninja mask myself to base the pattern on.

On, and I *think* there should be a little red swastika on there somewhere (though can't see it in ref pics at the moment. And the right cheek greeblie (as you look at it) should have a star on it:

Superb! Looks great.

Im tempted to do one now. Shame you dont see more of it in the film.

I think the swastika is black isnt it?

For the lenses I used 1/8 inch thick smoked acrylic. I had the sheet laser cut by a guy near me. Since the sheets ran by the foot I had the guy cut the entire sheet into lenses was left with over a hundred of them :wacko. There are 4 lenses in each eye as to give it as dark effect as possible.

Shame that DSC is a recaster although this mask is heavily modified with original greeblies and the battle damage so it is not exactly like sideshows'. There ninja mask on the other hand well I wouldn't get that one since it is apparent it is recasted.

The throat guard was made using two types of leather purchased at Michaels. I then painted the leather to make it look worn. As for the swastika, I may add it or just leave it out. As for the star on the left breather, I was told that all the parts accept for the shell were sculpted so I guess that would have been quite difficult to make.

I am happy with the mask altogether. The quality is a nice thick resin and it fits nicely.

Interestingly enough both sides appear to have a swastika, you can just see a worn one in the pic here:

I see these on ebay alot.
is it a reworked sideshow mask?
Also, you might be able to buy some quarter inch swastika decals online.

From the photos i have, the swastikas do look like decals, they even have the white edge around the black.

Here is my line up so far. Still looking for 1 more sideshow base in order to display my Venetian mask on. Anyone willing to sell theirs let me know I have things to trade as well as money or just cash is ok. I know its a long shot.

I've continued to tinker with my mask over the last few months and decided to add greeblies to make it more mechanical looking. I disassembled an old camera I had and also repainted certain parts in gold and silvers so the circuit boards could look more like tubing. I had a blast doing this and although looks simple took about 5 hours to put together in a believable way. This isn't screen accurate but I prefer it than without it. Let me know what you think.

The mod looks great but as its a sandstorm mask it wouldnt last too long with those tiny gears and mechanical parts visible. Nice mod though all the same!

Great Work!!! I love what you have done(y)thumbsup

Looks good!

I'd weather those shiney bits though to fit in with the weathering of the whole mask.

That is a pretty Bad Photoshop work to erase the swastika... Looks like they used the smudge tool, A simple work with clone tool would made it seamless.
:thumbsdown

I am not very familiar with photoshop and I had to remove the swastika as I originally posted that pic on a german site. We are not allowed to show swastikas in germany :/

Actually, the name "Sandstorm Mask" is my invention :D I kinda like it, that is has been accepted by Kroenen fans ;)

I really don't know what Kroenen would have used this mask for, but due to the color, it looked like it could have been used in a desert surrounding. But of course you can add any greebly you like.

You did a very nice job on the masks!!!

Thomas

Thomas your Kroenen collection is really the staple. I basically used your idea of using sideshow bases and I was able to obtain 3 without sideshow's masks fir great deals. I would love a Final Battle Mask damaged but there are none currently available in kit form. All my masks besides sideshow's and Facing Costumes Final battle masks are kits. The fact that you actually sculpted yours by hand I give you huge kudos bro.

I really like the name Sandstorm mask you came out with and agree that this mask would be great if used in a desert setting.

I am a huge fan of the character Kroenen and Thomas ever since I saw your collection I have tried my best to duplicate it. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!:thumbsup

:$

Thank you for the compliments!

As for the damaged final battle mask: I would purchase a clean one, cut the left side out and resculpt it using fibre glass auto body putty and milliput. That's what I did with mine. It's not so hard :)
