The Anti-Witch Mojo Bag
I’ve decided to proceed with putting together a Mojo bag from the episode The Trevi Collection.
First some background
To paraphrase……In the context of the word itself, “Mojo”, it actually originated in Africa. It was a bag with a collection of sorts of items deemed to have supernatural powers to ward off evil. The western world adopted the use of the name to apply to a bag of items to use against all things deemed evil i.e. Witches, Zombies, Monsters, Evil Spirits, etc.
Source: Mojo (African-American culture)
One could argue that Early American Witches, could have adopted the use of the name “Mojo” from the African slaves supernatural religious practices bought to the new world.
So, in the Kolchak fashion witch episode, Kolchak is deceived by witches to destroy anti-witch items and is given a list calling out a Mojo bag, brass bell, and copper thread. When he finds out he was duped, after trash can burning those items…..he shows up at the I.N.S. Office with a Mojo bag of his own…aside from the Mojo bag itself, and brass bell, you could hear from the dialogue he mentions breaking glass as a noise witches hate, he goes on to mention Bear claws, and buttons. He also does not mention copper thread, but instead copper wire.
So to list it all
Mojo bag itself
Brass bell
Copper thread or copper wire
Bear claws
Buttons
Sound of breaking glass (mirrors)
Funny thing about the Mojo bag itself….. there appears to be a property master’s /continuity person’s blooper.
Two different bags were used in the episode. One being smooth brown leather and the other being brown rough suede (flesh side).
One could say that the smooth brown leather bag was turned inside out. I don’t think so, because the method of cinching the bags are different. The smooth bag is drawstringed at the top of the bag with a smooth leather cord, while the rough suede bag is tied around the neck of the bag with rawhide cord.
Imo, I’m convinced it’s two different bags. Sizes look to be different as well.
The version shown most in the episode is the smooth brown leather bag.
That is the kind I’ll use for my Mojo bag.
In a preliminary search for the items on eBay and Etsy…. This Pocket Prop is doable…but it’s gonna cost depending on what variations of the listed Mojo bag items, I choose, since it will be a Close Enough prop and not an exact match.
I’ll post what I end up with in the future. For some items, I will have a slightly tangenting rationale reason for why I chose what I chose
I must mention…..not all Witches are evil…there are good “natured” Witches as well…sometimes known as white witches. It’s the black witches you got to watch out for. (Neither white or black are referenced to one’s race.)
Peace
