Kolchak: The Night Stalker - His Gear

The Anti-Witch Mojo Bag

I’ve decided to proceed with putting together a Mojo bag from the episode The Trevi Collection.

First some background

To paraphrase……In the context of the word itself, “Mojo”, it actually originated in Africa. It was a bag with a collection of sorts of items deemed to have supernatural powers to ward off evil. The western world adopted the use of the name to apply to a bag of items to use against all things deemed evil i.e. Witches, Zombies, Monsters, Evil Spirits, etc.

Source: Mojo (African-American culture)

One could argue that Early American Witches, could have adopted the use of the name “Mojo” from the African slaves supernatural religious practices bought to the new world.

So, in the Kolchak fashion witch episode, Kolchak is deceived by witches to destroy anti-witch items and is given a list calling out a Mojo bag, brass bell, and copper thread. When he finds out he was duped, after trash can burning those items…..he shows up at the I.N.S. Office with a Mojo bag of his own…aside from the Mojo bag itself, and brass bell, you could hear from the dialogue he mentions breaking glass as a noise witches hate, he goes on to mention Bear claws, and buttons. He also does not mention copper thread, but instead copper wire.

So to list it all

Mojo bag itself
Brass bell
Copper thread or copper wire
Bear claws
Buttons

Sound of breaking glass (mirrors)

Funny thing about the Mojo bag itself….. there appears to be a property master’s /continuity person’s blooper.
Two different bags were used in the episode. One being smooth brown leather and the other being brown rough suede (flesh side).

One could say that the smooth brown leather bag was turned inside out. I don’t think so, because the method of cinching the bags are different. The smooth bag is drawstringed at the top of the bag with a smooth leather cord, while the rough suede bag is tied around the neck of the bag with rawhide cord.

Imo, I’m convinced it’s two different bags. Sizes look to be different as well.

The version shown most in the episode is the smooth brown leather bag.

That is the kind I’ll use for my Mojo bag.

In a preliminary search for the items on eBay and Etsy…. This Pocket Prop is doable…but it’s gonna cost depending on what variations of the listed Mojo bag items, I choose, since it will be a Close Enough prop and not an exact match.

I’ll post what I end up with in the future. For some items, I will have a slightly tangenting rationale reason for why I chose what I chose ;)

I must mention…..not all Witches are evil…there are good “natured” Witches as well…sometimes known as white witches. It’s the black witches you got to watch out for. (Neither white or black are referenced to one’s race.)

Kolchak Figure Update

Well, I received my Kolchak 3.75 figure

The Tie End has been squared and the color of the shoes are now white. He also uses a clamshell that you can open and close so that Kolchak is removable and replaceable in the packaging without damaging the card. Comes with a camera and stake. Perhaps I’ll 3D print other accessories. Overall I’m Happy.

Update: The Kolchak backpack is in for the Kon’s

Overall I like it!

Keep in mind this bag is sized for Kidz…… * Full size backpack* — Size: 15”x12”x 4"

Your not going to fit a Crossbow in it…..

You will be able to fit and carry your camera and recorder and other items to and from the Kon’s ….as well as have room for some items bought at the Kon’s….like comics, figures, collectibles, etc.. it will certainly hold your lunch, snacks, 2 small 16oz. water bottles (on the outside). It has 1 outside zippered pocket, and 1 non-zippered larger pocket on the inside. Also a sewed on one hand tote strap loop and 2 adjustable shoulder straps.

Might use it for upcoming Komic-Fest….definitely for Komic-Kon

Yeah…. definitely not the size backpack you would use on a seven day Sqwatching trip.

Purchased Seersucker Blue/White on Etsy with monogramming included. Choice of Font (I chose Times) and stitching color (I chose Navy Blue)…it matches nicely.

A reminder…. Nelson Kolchak is Carl Kolchak’s fictitious nephew that I made up as my family connected persona to Uncle Carl.….. :)

Ah yes, Barry "Clay Guy" Crawford. I've never met him, but we chatted through e-mails during a purchase or two. His "claymation" sculpting style isn't for everyone but I like it, he seems to be a nice guy, and I think his prices are reasonable. I don't have his "Diablero" kit, but I do have his Kolchak and a few from other productions; I might even get around to building and painting them one of these days.

….”one of these days”….

I’ve said that myself of many a model still in their boxes in my attic…

The older I get, the shakier my hands get…..painting models in detail will be problematic.

Glad you liked it. You will notice, since Karl is one person, that he publicly may act like Dana Scully and give off the impression that he's a skeptic while privately doing a Mulder and believing every word. And acting on his firm belief that it's all real. His character has a duality to it.

My MOJO bag is almost complete…..waiting on two more components.

I found a creative way to do the smashing of glass/mirrors as a sound effect placed within the MOJO bag.

I found on eBay a 30sec sound recorder module (you can find them up to 2-4 minutes of erasable recording time in duration). I’ve put together a 30sec audio clip that has the smashing of the mirrors as well as the public accusations of being a witch. This module while in the MOJO bag will be activated simply by pressing the play button that will also be in the bag. I suppose I could attach the play button on the inside near the neck of the bag opening….maybe Velcro’s.

The other button is the record function which could be folded down with its wiring or wrapped lower in the bag, so as not to be in the way. If you know that you never going to use it elsewhere and or erased and then a new recording……then you can clip the record button and wiring off the module once you’ve recorded onto it.

Below is a jpeg/audio clip video you can see and hear for yourself.

Just finished the vampire episode. Surprised they ended it with a burning cross. But anyway, has his typewriter been identified and is it the same one he takes to LA in this episode?

I believe one of the older Dracula legends had him burned to ashes and the ashes put in a coffin, and he still came back to life later. But fire / Dracula, yeah, I guess in one mythology I can think of.
