I'm not completely happy with how "real" the "chips and scratches" look...

But...

I will do another pass to finesse what I have, AND, looking at original screen-used versions, they're not any better. Plus, I will go over much of it with black pastel powder to blend and dirty down.

Again, its a Work In Progress...

As I'm under House Arrest.

Suppose the pipes should retain a little rust?

I'm brushing on acrylic silver and it takes for ever to cover. Right now it looks better than the latest pics, but still has some "rust" showing through.

Maybe I'll keep a little bit?

What I've found works very well for simulating rubbed off paint/finish is to paint a base layer of silver then the base color. After the base color has dried, carefully go over the areas that you want to look worn with some 0000 steel wool and gradually sand away the base layer so that the silver base coat starts to show. This is a really good way for areas to look like that the finish has worn off from lots of handling and/or holster wear.

Lots of variability with this prop, looking at what are purported to be originals (with one exception):

Notably, the "connector" between the handle proper, and the body, varies...

On the rubber stunt, and the Roddenberry.com it is solid black.

On most of the rest, it is the rust color of the body, but weathered to an near-black appearance.

Very nice. The weathering almost looks like what you would see from holster wear.

Thanks! That was sort of the intent...

Still not completely satisfied, but am not sure if I'll futz with it more.

I've since gone after it with the black pastel chalk. Right now it lays half-way between how "clean' the Rod.com version looks, and like a genuine screen-used prop. It is more beaten up and realistic that the Rod.com one, but needs more work if I want to capture that true screen-used look.
