Kialna's 2014 Halloween Costume Contest Entry - Smaug the Magnificent

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

I cannot wait to see this one finished! It will be pretty spectacular I'm sure! Keep up the great work!

Thank you! :)

I started with a mockup of the upper legs. I'd say it's a success. Some minor changes, but the general idea works.

EDIT:

I also started on the pauldrons. Unfortunately I don't have enough worbla to finish them off, but the general shape is already there. And it makes me very happy. They will be raised a bit, so they look bigger.

I did a small update on the head. I started with spikes/ridges. I'm still wondering how I will make the horns. I think I'll go for a hollow design to keep it as lightweight as possible. And detatchable. The horn in the middle, and the four horns on the side will be detachables.

I fixed the nosthril, gave him a frown/snarl, and 'fused' the spikes with the skin.

In the meanwhile, I got my boots which will be the base for the lower legs. I found out Smaug has 5 toes. I'll take some artistic liberties with that now. I either go for 3 toes front, 1 toe back, 4 toes front and 1 toe raised. I am not entirely certain. I am going to puzzle about this.

Very nice!
I'm following this build with much interest and awe. :)

Ah thanks, there are some interesting methods that didn't cross my mind.

Also, both glove molds are done. I hope to cast them in latex VERY soon.

I have been working on the boots. These will be lined with the faux-leather, so then everything will stay in place better than it will now........

My first ever pull with latex. It needs touch ups or even another casting. The other hand went better I think. I learn with every step :)

Everything here is pure gold. Simply amazing work! Don't even think about stopping.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

Wow this project is moving really fast. I'm amazed you managed to get things done so quickly and to such a great standard.
Keep it up, it all looks amazing :)

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

There's a mistake in the head, but fixing it would be very hard I think. It would involve removing the clay, try to heat it into the right shape after cutting things open. But once cut, I can't just put it back together. So I'm kind of thinking just to leave it like this. It won't be entirely screen accurate anyway. And I can do what I want more or less. But I did notice, that once the horns are on, it suddenly becomes less of an issue. Pics of the horns will follow later today, as I'm working on those (priming)
