Karellen Makeup for Childhood's End

Hi Everyone,
At the end of last year I was hired as the lead sculptor on a job making a prosthetic creature suit for a mini series called Childhood's End. It ended up being a great job and a lot of sculpting was done for an intricately detailed suit that included head, horns ,full body suit, gloves, legs, hooves and wings! Charles Dance is the actor who played the role of Karellen ,and the job of sculpting the prosthetic for his face was a balancing act. Trying to keep his likeness showing through the sculpt and making sure it was thin enough in the right places so that he could emote properly under quite a thick appliance was a challenge to say the least! Childood's End premiered last week on the Syfy channel in the U.S so some of you may have already seen the character that is Karellen.....

Seriously, that was some amazing work! Several times during that movie I thought to myself "Man, I want to be the guy who gets to sculpt something like that for a living."

I only recently read this book myself after my father recommended it to me for years, so I still had a clear mental image of how I thought Karellen would look. I was really amazed by how close your sculpt was to that mental picture.

Thanks a lot Colossus601! There was a lot of great work done by everyone involved so I am glad the transition the costume made from the studio to the screen was a smooth one! I still haven't seen the mini series yet but hope to see it soon.
BadAtNames -Thanks for the comments! There was a pretty extensive design process before the final look of Karellen was approved. It seem everyone was on the same page though, as far as staying true to how he was described in the book so we didn't stray too far from that look. The sculpture of the head and horns was a highlight of the job for me. It became apparent as the sculpture progressed that this was an iconic looking creature even as a static piece of clay, and when brought to life by a great actor it would be amazing!

A bit of a necro post, but I have finally gotten around to watching this and I loved the show but i REALLY fell in love with the Karellen design.

Seriously amazing work on his character creation and keeping Charles Dance showing through just enough. Once I finish my Lycan I have to attempt a bust as the design has me captivated! Again, amazing work!

Hey, I also wanted to chime in about this. I didn't know the details of the story, so when they kept talking about how Karellen couldn't reveal himself and that people wouldn't accept him, I was trying to guess what that meant and wasn't coming up with anything that really justified the concern...then I saw him and laughed (in a good way). Looking like the devil would be bad P.R. to say the least. But my other reaction was that it was a very good design and execution of a devil character. Very impressive work. And great casting for the part too. I wasn't familiar enough with the actor to know who he was and had to look him up after watching the series.
