Julien’s Upcoming Hero Phaser & Communicator Auction

Let me say this about percentage of certainty - if Wand Company was allowed to scan this P2 and P1 - and then sell a plastic version as they did of Greg Jein's - I would purchase at least 4 of them without hesitation. (Note: For Wand Company - I do not need a remote control - lights and sounds would be nice but not required.)

I have loved the Finney P2 since I saw the first B&W closeup of if and the closeup in "Court-Martial" (with TMOST P1) sealed the deal!

ITITNB with the green (mostly) removed. It looks like the TMOST P1 with the blue jewel but I can't be certain. It would be nice to see the scratches on the thumbwheel. I think the Conscience / Lenore / Riley has a red jewel and we know the GJ does not have a jewel so that narrows it down.

Feek61 - I apologize - I had gotten confused on which P2 / P1 the thread at that point was talking about. I realized after I responded that you were not talking about the "Finney" P2. (See post # 412)

Yes - later in the thread (after I realized my error) I agreed - I too think the "Lenore / Riley" P2 was built with a short emitter. You can see it clearly when it was a B&W P2 IMO in episodes 6 and 7.
No apology needed, I was just confused because we were talking about two different things, no harm, no foul!

Carry on with the conversation!!! :) I must say, loving this thread!!

What, you think it's possible that someone spent literally YEARS researching, fabricating, obtaining original materials, tweaking, re-tweaking, re-re-tweaking, aging a battery to death so it leaked, drying glues, heating plastic... all so he could have a $100k payday someday? Wow... now that I type this....

All I'm saying is that more data is good, leaving even less room for doubt.

Considering all the twists and turns of the 2021 auction, this all seems pretty easy, so far. I just don't want to see the other shoe drop, for once.

And, yes, scammers are always trying to make better fakes. If only that time, energy, and talent could be used for good instead of evil...

...yet I keep seeing the wild flash-cuts and hearing the music from that scene...

Nice to see the pin feature in this and confirmed in the GJ, a feature missing in every fake I have seen. Unfortunately, the next round of fakes will no doubt have that feature.

Via ChatGTP:
Yes, the TOS hero phaser that will be displayed at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2024 is indeed the one owned by the Japanese collector, Yutaka Sone. Julien’s Auctions will include extensive documentation verifying the authenticity and provenance of the phaser, which details its repair by Wah Ming Chang and its acquisition by Sone in 2013 .

The phaser will be featured in the upcoming auction, confirmed to be sold either by Sone himself or his estate, adding further credibility and value to the item with its detailed historical documentation .

Interesting. This will hopefully be a step up from "Phillip Boyce", then.

That's the inherent problem, here. Much like the T-800 and the T-1000 in TERMINATOR 2, the scammers have the same files we do. They know what we know.

Every little tell and quirk discussed in these threads is public knowledge.

Who knows? I say this purely as a hypothetical, but maybe someone saw the holes in the Jein phaser, either deduced or invented the presence of the pins, and then stuck one into their new fake. A plausible-yet-incomplete detail to lend an air of authenticity.

We need to be vigilant, and question everything. From my small experience and the behind-the-scenes testimonials I've been given from this crazy world, this sort of thing happens A LOT. Even top experts can be fooled. There are tons of fake props/costumes/etc. out there that are sold for a premium all the time.

Time will tell what is and isn't fake....

IF this goes for big money you know darn well we will be seeing lots of hero phasers pop up in short order...

My initial gut feeling when this one popped up was suspicion. Seems like we get a new Jet Propulsion special or two every 2-3 years, after all.

Muddying the waters is that we've seen a lot of legacy cast/crew die, over the past few years, which makes it more plausible when these long-lost artifacts start popping up.

True, yet then we have to deal with the nature of collectors that are true life long fans which happen to have money....

MOST have popped up already...

Then we have run of the mill movie memorabilia collectors, yet those types tend to sell off their collections in the search something more rare......

I think we all are suspicious of any Trek prop and even jaded at this point after so many fakes. I don't believe there is much question on this one.
At this point my only real question was the prop preserved in as close to its original state OR did they kind blur the boundaries by combining a preservation with a restoration attempt.....

I'm sure either way it was done with good intentions..

Another thing that is interesting is that the P1s seemed to be paired with their respective P2s. The P1's seemed to be matched with the same P2s throughout the series and still to this day with the survivors, which makes me wonder if the little idiosyncrasies of each made it so they did not quite fit right in a different P2 body.

Thoughts?

Maybe we should think about ourselves... turn to the Dark Side... sell our souls, make money... end this destructive conflict & bring order to the Trek prop world! Work as a team, fool the fans, set ourselves up as the world burns & fascism takes over. Yeah, that's the ticket! We could be rich, and ride out the end of our planet in STYLE!!!
*Wakes up*
not cool...

I do like the idea of forming an official RPF certification to help authenticate these props; there is a lot of knowledge here. The last fake phaser P2 auction that was auctioned off was a crime. It should have never happened and the auction house did it with full knowledge that there were problems with it (but they did not want to hear or pursue any questions about it).

Meh. Truth is preferable to money.
