Julien’s Upcoming Hero Phaser & Communicator Auction

Are you interpreting “not insertable” as in P1 not seating correctly into p2, or perhaps meaning, not acceptable to be used in close ups - “insert” shots?

Pretty sure it's the second one.

"We spent $7000 on these and they're not even suitable for close-ups if you can f@$#ing believe it."

I just don't know, some days. Nothing TOS Phaser has said actually warrants an apology, but okay.

Meanwhile, on the flipside, this actually happened. And I'm still flabbergasted at the audacity.

Will Shanko grace us with his presence, too? It was one of my favorite RPF moments of all time when he popped up in the 2021 auction thread to chime in, the mods realized he was banned many years ago, and then banned him again. Hilarious.
I too am interested in the HD (I Hope) Julien's photographs. I do not know where Shanko is right now. He was in a CA penitentiary for a while and was prop-active again when he got out, he made no secret of where he had been for two years, aka at the time he reappeared. Avoid flabbergasting as it is bad for the lungs LOL.

While researching the phasers I came across this memo from Herb Solow dated 8/04/66 that is talking about the cost of the phasers. Interestingly, in the middle paragraph he mentions that they had to have Wah Chang "fix up one of these pistols so that it would be more interesting in detail and more adequate for close up insert work."

This memo seems to confirm that the conversions were not done at the same time and is strong evidence that the first one converted was the Conscience / Lenore / Riley phaser since it was the first filmed. It seemingly confirms why the Conscience / Lenore / Riley was a little different from the others because it was the first one as we suspected. Furthermore, the first converted phaser filmed was indeed the Conscience / Lenore / Riley on 8/09/66 and was the only hero filmed until 8/17/66 when two additional converted hero P2's were filmed. It appears Wah was working on converting the other three in the interim period.

Most likely after they got the first phaser back from Wah, they decided to convert the rest of them since the look was much better on film than the B&W's

I was well-schooled during in-person in meetings, with: Glen L. (buddaid) and Greg Jein, that props (and everything for each show in-point) were budgeted "per-episode" as that was just the practice for every TV show in the 1960's. I was advised that this information came to Glen & Greg directly from Bob Archer who was the VP of $$ for the Star Trek show. For most TV shows; viewer rating, ongoing advertising sponsorship and, very limited network "slot" time scheduling drove this budgeting method. Back in the day when NBC aired this show, everyone tuned into just the major syndicated networks; NBC, CBS and, ABC (and everyone had to adjust the TV antenna for a crap picture). Let us recall Star Trek got bumped off the air to make "Prime-Time-Slot space" for GunSmoke. There was no on-demand cable back then...

Gunsmoke was on CBS and Star Trek was on NBC so it seems unlikely that Star Trek would be bumped for Gunsmoke. Also, I looked through all of the production records including the Desilu personnel roster and the Star Trek staff and crew list and see no mention of Bob Archer; please clarify his position. All non episode specific items such as props and sets were amoritized over the length of the season and / or the entire series which is not new information.

Of course you're interested in the photos...

You're the man behind the N.Nichols midgrade forgeries because you were dumb enough to use the S&W midgrade kit for those which you happened to be building and selling on eBay at the time both of "her" mid's went up for auction...

There's no secret you are involved in the hero phaser forgery from a few years back...

The best thing you can do is get out of the hobby and stop pretending to be an honest individual...

(Hint—absolutely none of them are real.)

Many makers turn to JPL to source hard-to-find phaser replica parts. I would recommend Tony’s site federationphaser/ scifiprops @ eCRATER Filter Search Result. He’s been around for ages, and has great customer service too! I believe his nozzles are way more accurate and although he has limited parts anymore his shop is worth checking out.

ALL hero phaser components (with time and patience, look up robn1’s scratch and asalaw’s build) can be fabricated in your home shop/ studio/ garage. Everyone needs to invest in a used, hobby metal-lathe when that opportunity strikes, although if careful, aluminum may be cut and shaped with a good wood lathe + oil. And yes, this is a thing - there are some excellent videos on this out there. So, no need to use JPL anymore. Period.

Anyone else depressed that their Beta Communicator build(s) now reek of inaccuracy?

Not that I'm TRYING to avoid finding joy in new prop discoveries, but there is a slight sense of disappointment that neither of these props really offer some massive boost to what we already know about the original props.

Beta having so many missing parts doesn't really offer anything new besides that weird crystal on the single control hub.

Finney seems to confirm a lot of what was already known, but other than the stop pin on the handle it doesn't really have any huge "aha" elements.

Just to be clear, I think it's amazing that these two have turned up, and with the phaser in such incredibly good condition too!

Jackals.
(raises hand)

But I'm not super-inclined to try to fix it. The key details are pretty much there. My Beta was more of a test-run for my (as-yet-unbuilt) Alpha, anyway.

Of course, John Long (the same guy who authenticated Beta and restored it with what looks to be an incorrect moire arrangement) still claims that Alpha is a fake, just like how certain narcissists now seem to need attention here. They have to be The Experts and/or the ones to fool everybody with replicas.

So sick of the egos and scammers, man.

Guys, what's your thoughts on the rhinestone mounted to Gamma's one surviving control knob. I don't know if I see it on the caps
from DOTD. I'm not convinced they belong since clearly someone added stones to missing knobs over the years.

That’s a hard one…

Part of me wonders if this jewel fell off…

…and was reglued on wrong hub…

Screen caps are inconclusive, to my eye.

Good point. Was it always there, or part of an early, ill-informed attempt to restore the prop?

There's no evidence of any of the other props ever having this detail. Why would Beta be an outlier?

I'd be inclined to leave it off, at least until more info surfaces.
