Jonah Hex Leila

Hey all, I'm new here, but not new to costuming. I saw the Leila costume and I think it's awesome. It seems like this community is mostly guys (?) as most forums I'm on are mostly girls, but anyone tell me if this costume is worth doing. I rarely do cosplay myself, I make cosplay for others, but this costume is really right up my alley. I love making period costumes and esp corsets.

any feedback would be great. Thanks to all.

Personally I had never heard of Jonah Hex untill SuperHeroHype started posting about the movie. As per the recognition of it, I think you'd have to wait and see how big the response is once it's in theaters to gague how much of a fan base you'll be catering to.

however, with your question of "is it worth doing", I have to answer a resounding yes - like you said, it's right up your alley, and as a great costumer friend of mine has said to me time and again, do it for yourself and because you want to - not for anyone else.

Thank you Drago for your time in responding. Yes, it is right up my alley, and plus it IS a hot costume, isn't it? :D

The most difficult part (for me) looks like getting the bustle skirt right with all the contrast fabrics, striping and gathering. The corset looks like the easiest part! And is the skirt attached to the corset (a possibility) or is it an underskirt entirely?

If you found someone to do a good Jonah Hex costume and went to a comic book convention together, you'd probably get a great reaction. Until I see how people respond to the movie, I don't know if it would be recognizeable by itself. That said, it is a very cool costume.

I say, if you think you can pull it off, then it's worth doing. Even if the movie flops and nobody recognizes the costume's origin, I can assure you that a costume like that will get a fair amount of attention.

Exactly. And think about if you want recognition for what character you are portraying, or for your skill in making an awesome period piece. Seems to me if it's the latter, then just go for it.

Just post pics when you are done. :angel

my guess is, but it is just a guess as I am just not familiar with these things, that it is a dress (the white top and black bottom) and then a corset that goes on top of that.
And yes, it is HOT

i suspect that few people would get it, unless you were in a place where it made sense. so, for example, if you were at a movie premiere in the outfit, folks there would probably recognize it.

however, i don't think the other people would care. they'd be snapping pics and hooting out comments ranging from flattering to crass regardless of whether or not they knew it was a costume.

Very hot costume. Doesn't look terribly hard to gather materials for. The skirt has a lot of layering and lacing, but seems to be a simple organza.

Doubtful. Just not the way they did things for this period. The cami probably comes down to the waist and the bustle is either tucked under or resting on top of the corset.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I most likely will be doing this, just bc I love to make corsets. I most likely won't *wear* it bc I don't look like Megan Fox! LOL I have a dress form this would look great on.

I think girls always want to look hot in costume anyway, and esp for Halloween when the noncosplayer community dresses up, this would be a great choice, since it's hot, but your not *really* showing anything, you know?

Yeah I think so too. I'm thinking the bustle might even be an easy-off tear away *wink* and probably thinking ruffle back bloomers/tap pants underneath. the draping in the front is has got me wondering though.

first off, who says you have to look like her exactly? It's basically the same as with theater - the costume makes the character. I'd say go for it, what have you got to lose?

Here's the pics I have which may help you a bit:

I'd say it's 3 part, top untucked enough to sag slightly over the top of the corset, underbust corset with 2 small tails in the front, and a 2 layer skirt, the shorter miniskirt wrapping all of the way around and the long skirt wrapping 3/4 with a bit of bunching which suggests it could go completely around.

oh, and a choker and thigh high stockings :D

Well, I can now tell you from experience...the costume is very fun to wear, but the general reaction is:

"Who are you supposed to be?"
"Did you see Jonah Hex?"
"OH YEAH! I saw those photos. Megan Fox, right?"

Lol the movie BOMBED, and it seemed like no one at SDCC had seen the actual movie itself. But don't let it deter you, the costume itself is very pretty. :)

i learned the hard way... do NOT go to see a movie just because megan fox is hot. you end up in a theater watching jennifer's body. be careful or it could happen to you!

Hahaha I love what you said about the movie (aside from the "this was the best line in the whole thing" because that was scary and disturbing), that "Jennifer's Body would have been a better movie had it solely been about Jennifer's Body."

Nah but I heard lots of "Oh Megan Fox ruined that movie"--she definitely didn't, since she was barely in it lol. She had like, what 6 lines, tops? Her role was to be eye candy and something for the protagonist to chase after--that's a proper use of her talent lol. The severe misuse and under utilization of John Malkovic was what ruined the movie. Josh Brolin was great but they dropped the entire plotline on his shoulders to carry without really bringing the villain forth enough. I didn't really care, I just loved that costume and it was a comic-book-movie-flavored excuse to invest in a quality corset already lol.

This was the Lilah costume I wore at SDCC last week. I hate how huge I had to make my lips look lol, but the makeup still worked. Also, you would not believe how hard it is to make that vacant facial expression. I have to visualize my brains leaking out of my ears. :lol

The corset is by Meshcantes corsetry: http://www.meschantes.com/
A friend of mine helped me make the skirt since I know nothing about patterning and she's excellent with that stuff, and I made the top. The top isn't accurate with the zipper, and all the trim is kind of played by ear (and I meant to make another line with the maroon trim on the skirt but I used all of it from the local fabric store haha). But it was still lots of fun. :)

This quote made my day....How uncomfortable was it to get around in the corset? My wife has worn them before and always says after several hours in one, it begins to really wear her down.

take care,
Tommy
