Joker (origin film)

I wasn't so sure about the idea of doing this but I'm at the least intrigued. Jaoquin is an incredible actor and I think his performance will be amazing.

Do I need a Joker movie? Nope. This trailer makes it look very interesting however. Creepy and all effed up is my kind of story. And if it ends with it not even being a real Joker origin, but some kind of weird possible origin story like how The Killing Joke was, then I'll really like it.

Gonna be honest here... This is probably my favorite trailer I've seen in a long time. I'm still on the thought that this will either be absolutely amazing or a complete cluster. There is no middle ground on this. But yeah... from that trailer, I'm in.

I have to say I am VERY excited and optimistic about this and I don't get where the negativity is coming from. Whether this ends up sticking to any previous origin story, or a completely original one, it looks like they're really trying to get deep into the woods with this one. From his pathetic life, taking care of his (mentally ill?) mom, to dealing with mental illness himself, to trying to fit in somehow but knowing deep down he just doesn't, to having life kick him when he's down, to finally snapping.
That one trailer told more of a "story" about this character than the entire Nolan movie with Ledger.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Ledger's joker and it was creepy as hell when it came out, because it hadn't been done before.
But this one actually disturbed me. AND I LOVED IT!
The shot showing his notepad where he's writing down jokes tells me the direction they're taking with this is so much more involved than anything Ledger did. the child-like handwriting, the innocent cheesy puns that he probably thinks are funny, and the writing devolving into basically becoming a diary where he's venting about having a mental illness where the handwriting gets even more childish. All of that was covered in just a couple of seconds with one single shot.

Phoenix is an infinitely better actor in my opinion than Ledger and I cannot wait to see what he does with this character

Not every character needs an origin story, the Joker is one of them. It seems decent but there's something strange about setting the origin of one of Batman 's top villains while he's still a child. I do like the look better than I did Letos take on it but eh unless the next trailers grab me it'll be wait for the digital release.

I'll echo what's been said above, but this is the first DC trailer I've been excited about since maybe Man of Steel? I think I've watched it 10 times already. It looks like a quiet character study about his slow descent into madness and the rise of the Clown Prince of Crime. If that's the case, it could be a refreshingly unique story in the comic book genre, just as Logan was a few years back. It's one of those rare trailers that I can't stop thinking about for hours and doing research about the film to find just a tiny bit more. I'm itching to watch this and really hope it's a home run.

I wasn't too keen on the idea of an origin film after what Ledger and Nolan did with the character in The Dark Knight. Too often origin stories tend to be nothing more than checklists made into films and they often suck.

Jared Leto was the Joker? I wasn't aware of that. I thought he was some cheap rubies costume wearing eminem wanna be with a grill. I have nothing against the actor but his look was just appalling. That wasn't the Joker.

As far as this movie goes, I'm very interested and where I was hesitant before I'm curious now. I was sold on the idea when I first saw shots of him in the costume but now seeing him in action I want to see what Joaquin does in the role. He is a phenomenal talent and I think this could be very interesting.

For characters that have been around since the 1930's I'm alright with different film incarnations just as there have been different versions in the comics themselves over the decades.

As cynical as I can be I'm actually optimistic about this one.

This teaser really gave me the Martin Scorsese vibe. I'll definitely see it regardless being a joker fan.

That is true. But I hope it won´t become a problem. It IMO is quite easy to pull up just a few movies that have very, very similar scene set ups. The instant "Psycho movie that is referrenced in the trailer" list atm has "Taxi Driver", "Falling Down", "Psycho", "Silence of the lambs", "Death wish" on it. Anybody care to add some more?
I am mildly curious about how they are going to portrait The Joker. And what kind of Joker. In almost all versions of the Joker that I know of the homicidal element is a great, great part. And if not, IIRC in the old Batman show and the Dini Animated series or the Lego series, the emphasis lies on his instability and crimes. ATM I can´t see either of that portrayed here. What drives him over the edge? We get a few glimpses, I hope they have a lot more in the movie to chew on.

The trailer seems to portray a character that is desperately trying to manage genuine mental illness. Given the current cultural climate, it will be interesting to see if audiences become more sympathetic towards the Joker and reject Batman as a trust fund bully.

Not my perspective, but it seems totally plausible.

Not looking forward to this. Looks like an arthouse film, and reminded me of the killer in Silence of the Lambs when Phoenix was dancing around. Also when he got hit with the board it reminded me of billy madison where the clown falls and spits out blood.

I actually wanted to hate it...I'm very against the DC "Everything must be dark!" thing. Even Superman is depressing as hell.

Yet, this still looks interesting to me. Weirdly, it's like it's not even a comic book movie. It just looks like a psychological thriller that happens to have the Joker in it. If it works it could be really rewarding long term...you could potentially have future movies where you've established a character with Hannibal Lector bonafides as a villain in a Batman movie.

Just saw the trailer. I didn't even know this was in the pipeline.

First off: Wakeen Phoenix has the acting chops to make for a compelling joker. But I fear that they will pair him with a supporting cast written like two dimensional cliche characters. (Like every single DC movie of recent) The two scenes in the trailer with cliche thugs, and one cliche politician doesn't give me hope on that end.

I am also in the boat that the Joker doesn't need an origin story. In my mind he is supposed to be an a direct reaction to Batman's actions. A eventual effect that shows the Batman can never truly finish what he started. But no, the trailer already looks like he will inspire a young Bruce in some way.

Here is hoping I am wrong as this ends up as an good Psycho type movie.

I read an article once...can’t remember where...that said this is specifically why Marvel films have been so successful, and for the most part avoided genre fatigue.

Basically they’re all “x type of film that just happens to have comic book characters in them.”

“Winter Soldier” is just an espionage flick with Cap in it. It’s very easy to picture the plot only being minimally changed to be pretty similar to a James Bond story.

“Ant-Man” is just a heist film with comic book characters in it.

“Guardians” is a space opera.

Obviously they have many more films, but I could definitely understand the author’s point of view.

That's exactly what Star Wars needs to survive. Genre films just set in a galaxy far far away.

I think of this like the difference between The Dark Knight vs. Detective Comics. Different take on the character so it doesn't necessarily have to conform to past iterations exactly.

I'm not one for origin films because they've often been terrible but given the talent involved I'm in.
