John Carter (Post-release)

Re: John Carter

The stuff i've read said it cost 200 to make, but to date has pulled in 184, yet is expected to lose 200. Seems to me that the loss is 16, no? Either that or they're going to claim to have put nearly 200 into advertising?

Re: John Carter

Here's the thing about John Carter... it has been stuck in "Development Hell" longer than any other movie ever made in the history of cinema! It's been in "Development Hell" as long as there's BEEN a film industry! :eek

You can read the whole, sad story in the book The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made by David Hughes. Disney alone has been trying to find ways to adapt the John Carter books since the 1930s. Are they factoring in all of the money they spent developing aborted adaptations since the 1930s? :confused

Re: John Carter

The thing that bugged me the most out of the whole film was not once did ANYONE say "the incomparable Dejah Thoris"....

Re: John Carter

I would like to hear from those who did not go see the movie and get their perspectives on why this movie didn't interest them. Being one who hasn't seen this movie and still has little to no desire in seeing at all, I guess I'll start.

  • Another story about a white man being put on an alien world where he changes the course of it's history.
  • John Carter himself. Something about him just didn't sit right with me when I saw him in the trailers. I know that's vague, I just felt no real interest in spending 2+ hours rooting for him.
  • Female lead obviously the damsel and the hero's prize in the end.
  • Hey Disney, if you're going to throw 300+ million into this movie, have the decency to stick to it's original title, John Carter of Mars. Not saying it would have earned you more money, but leaving Mars out certainly didn't get you much either.

That's what I got out of the marketing at least.

Re: John Carter

Yeah disney is losing a ton on this movie. Not to mention kids these days have never heard of the author and are far from likely to pick up a book to find out.

Re: John Carter

Yes, the whole concept of changing the title is a total misfire.

Shortened the title to remove "of mars" so that people not interested in sci-fi would hopefully see the film on a chance, but instead they left it with a vague title and because of that the general public had nothing to make them interested in it at all.

Re: John Carter

Disney had no problem marketing this correctly of they wanted to. They HAVE a marketing department and a good one, yet rumors were weeks before this made it to theaters that it was going to tank.

I agree, this was either a huge misstep or done on purpose, the latter seeming to be more likely.
Its a good film, as well it will make monies for the next few weeks and then in European theaters as well on the bluray DVD formats.

No, there is much more to this "failure", than it being just a lackluster film.

As for a loss of income, no studio film technically makes a profit, the studio industry is one of the few industries that knows tax laws inside out. I don't believe for a second that this film will truly produce a loss.

Re: John Carter

Like I've said before, the trailer that I saw looked exactly like the arena battle from AOTC. I've seen that and this looked like nothing new. Also, ticket prices are outrageous, audience is very distracting in theaters and it can't be that good if they decided to release it in March - a non blockbuster time when many more people would/could go see it.

Re: John Carter

Agree with above. Ticket prices and audience..."participation"...are things that keep me out of the theater.

When I do go, that movie has to be one that really makes it worth my while. I am a very discerning movie-goer simply because I don't have the time or patience to sit through a crappy movie or crappy movie experience.

And I have options. I have no issue what-so-ever waiting to see this in my house on the various forms of delivery available today.

Why didn't I go see John Carter? It looked like a "wait until DVD release" movie for me.

I have been scratching my head trying to figure out if i should go see this with my boys.
To answer the question...
It looked like an "executive boardroom" idea, like the "Monkeys".
JOHNSON! I WANT A NEW BLOCKBUSTER THAT SELLS TOYS AND DVDS IN TIME FOR XMAS 2012!!!"
We will save money on the movie rights and put the whole budget into cgi and promotion.
Reading the reviews. I expect to like it, as will my youngest.

I 'd agree with that statement as well. Plus, i'd never heard of John Carter before - other than Noah Wylie's character on ER :)

The commercial, to me, looked like a hodpodge of recent sci fi movies. It wasn't until more recent trailers (last 3-4 weeks) that the story basis I got was someone was transported from earth to fight a battle on that planet. Here i go the info it was someone from the civil war and that the planet was mars...

I don't get a sense of actual story out of it's ad campaign.

Re: John Carter

I remember thinking back when "The Terminator" -which was released somewhere between the Christmas movie season and summer blockbuster movie season- and "Raiders of the lost Ark" had came out. I had wondered how much further Hollywood could keep raising the bar on entertainment before audience expectations would come to a point where they would become so jaded that nothing impresses them anymore.

I see so much junk (not necessarlily here, on this forum) about how people attack and pass judgement on a film before it's been released, as if their opinion really matters and everyone should listen to them, that I wonder why don't they get off their asses and make the movie they feel they can do sooo much better. But that's too hard. It's just easier to rip into somebody else's work.

Why is it so difficult to come up with an original science fiction story? Because it's already been written. Space travel, undersea travel, time travel, interdimensions, deathrays, lasers and blasters -and a lot of these speculations have come to past- are all there in some variation or another. This story being dicussed here and being compared to other stories was the well others had dipped into for inspiration. It's this story that other stories should be compred to for being ripped off from so often that people are whining constantly "There's nothing original..."

I've read the books of ERB. I did see John Carter, and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Sorry for the rant.

Good rant!!
Watching JC reminded me of watching Flash Gordon (the OLD one) as a kid. Swashbuckling adventure, period. Plain fun.

Boris Vallejo painting from before the movie was ever conceived. Pretty cool, eh?

Re: John Carter

My two cents are I liked it a lot. Having known nothing of JC before the movie I thought it was very much worth seeing on the big screen. I hate it bombed, I just think it was a victim of its company's success. What i mean by that is nobody gave it a chance. Its billed as Sci fi - Fantasy,, and the average adult who is going to the movies and wants to see a Sci-fi movie will see ONE word on the poster or trailer that will turn them away.. Disney. A Disney Sci-Fi SCREAMS kids movie.. So you kill most of the sci fi community right there. Ill admit that the D word kept me from seeing it till now,, I just had a nite to kill and NOTHING else was in the theatre. So I went. And WOW,, I liked it a lot. Attach Disney to anything and you think children.. Had it been any other production company, im betting the turnout would have been much better. BUT GO SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN!!! ITS WORTH IT!!! Love that dogtoad...

It is cool, but I beg to differ.... as revealed in The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made by David Hughes, Disney originally planned to make a John Carter of Mars adaptation as THE VERY FIRST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM back in the 1930s... by 1936, a Disney animator had produced a reel of test footage, but it ultimately didn't get the greenlight to be produced, and that footage then became "lost" until it was later re-discovered in the 1970s.

Then, somewhere around 1957, Disney revisited the animated adaptation idea AGAIN for TV, but again, it didn't get produced. There are, however, concept images out there, revealing an EXTREMELY cartoony, trippy look reminiscent of other cartoons from the late '50s and early '60s. I'm actually GLAD it didn't end up getting produced, as many fans would have ultimately been dissatisfied with the way it looked, I think.

And both of those aborted attempts to film John Carter of Mars happened a very long time before Vallejo started his career. ;)

They should have made a John Carter Of Mars video game first, kids would go for that. Then make the movie. A movie adaptation of the game? Gotta see it!

Haven't seen it yet but I will soon.

Frelling brilliant!!

2D or 3D?
And... don't wait too long, bro. Blink & it might be gone.
Someone doesn't want this movie to succeed...

A man finding his will to live & fight again? Bad example in today's world... we need to follow, not fight.
:facepalm
Sorry, I almost got political there...
Gotta go watch Omega Glory.
