Jim Moriarty's Coat

Hey, all

I'm a fan of the Sherlock series, and I've noticed two pieces of clothing that have caught my eye. One is obviously Sherlock's coat (widely recognised by every Sherlock fan :)) but another article of clothing that interests me is one worn by Sherlock's nemesis, Jim Moriarty.

(Sorry, couldn't resize the image any smaller:facepalm)

He wears a mid-length overcoat during his final confrontation with Sherlock in the Series 2 finale 'The Reichenbach Fall'. It has some features that you would see on a normal suit jacket or coat - buttons on the cuffs (three), center vent at the back, two outer pockets, and a black lining - but the one detail that interests me is the collar - it almost looks like a nehru suit.

Doing some research, it is revealed (via Sherlockology) that the coat is made by the brand 'The Kooples', and a shot of the coat shows that it has a hidden fly at the front, and the collar is made of leather.

Seeing as the coat is no longer in stock, could people please point me in the right direction as to where I could find a good replica of this coat? I've looked at the Hello Cosplay replica of the jacket, but it looks a bit dodgy (unusual, since I've done business with them in the past, and they've turned out brilliant).
I'm not looking for the coat right now, because if it had to be custom made, it would cost a lot (more than I could afford).

Thank you for your help :)

You could try asking MagnoliClothiers or BaronBoutique. While Magnoli will propably be pricey, you should get a fine piece of clothing aswell. They've got a Sherlock coat replica aswell (So does BaronBoutique, but it's not as good IMO).

Thank you for the advice.
I wanted to avoid having to have it custom made at a very expensive place - even though Magnoli is known for his remarkable quality of products (I have one of his Swirly Ties - it's fantastic!). But if it comes to that, well...my bank balance is going to hate me :lol

Perhaps you could find a topcoat, and flip up the collar, add some leather to the top of the collar. And maybe iron it out to make it stay up.

Oh and also, the Hello Cosplay coat looks incorrect in about every regard. It's too short, the fabric's too coarse and rough, the upper collar is made from satin/silk and not leather. It's got 3 buttons on the cuffs, and it just looks more like a nehru blazer than a coat.

I could try and do that, but the trouble is that a normal top coat has lapels, whereas, if we look at the picture of the coat buttoned up...

When it closes up, it doesn't have any lapels at all. So, technically, it could be seen as a nehru coat (rather than a blazer).

And yes, I completely agree - Hello Cosplay's take on the coat really is very poor...

Interesting. I had wondered if he just had the collar up in that scene, unique little coat there. Like it.

So did I for a while, until I noticed, looking back on the scene, that it looked different than it would have done :facepalm

Anyway, if I can't manage to find a decently-priced replica soon (and I'm staying away from the Hello Cosplay one...), I'll have to ask Indy is he could do a replica of this - of course, it might have to be when I get more money...

I was right when I said my bank balance was going to hate me :lol

Right, time for an update, because I've found something interesting...

Take a look at the coat in full...

Above the right pocket (or left, depending on if you're viewing it as you're wearing it, or seeing it in the picture), there's a ticket pocket, but with no flap. Normally, if the outer pockets were to have flaps, then any ticket pocket would have a flap as well - but not here, it seems.

There is also a breast pocket which is the same style as the ticket flap, and both slits are bordered with the same leather as the collar, it seems.

Anyway, if I can't find something that replicates this coat closely within the next few months, then I'll give Indy a shout, and we'll see if he'll be interested to take this on.

EDIT: Oops, seems that only the ticket pocket slits are lined with the leather, but the breast pocket is not. Sorry about that!

Nothing important, but something interesting I found - this coat is not only used in 'The Reichenbach Fall', but is also worn by Moriarty in a scene in 'A Scandal in Belgravia', where he's texting a rather taunting message to Sherlock's brother, Mycroft.

Also, quick question - has anyone ID'd the jacket that Moriarty wears whilst infiltrating the Tower of London in 'The Reichenbach Fall' yet? Been looking for it everywhere.

I am also looking for a good replica of this coat. I really love the design.
Do you have a update JokerMan?

Not exactly an update, but I have an estimate of the price of one from Indy if he were to make it - around about $695 roughly...I need a job.

Yeah it's awesome. But $695 pff :cry Did u find a coat a bit similar like this one? I really like it :$

That's the price you pay for quality goods.

Sadly, no - I haven't found a similar coat - there's always the HelloCosplay version, but to be honest, I'd stay away from that one. If you want a look at that one, here's the link:
Sherlock Holmes Jim Moriarty Costume Wool Coat [WS103] - £87.76 : Cosplay UK Store | Hello Cosplay
It's painful to look at, though, knowing the details of the actual coat...

Hi all

I own this coat; bought it maybe a month before this was aired in the UK from Selfridges and was really pleased to see it on Sherlock - & how well it suited Moriarty. I've hardly worn it though, keep saving it for 'best' but nothing is ever good enough! I think I'd be prepared to sell it if anyone's interested. Happy to send as many photos as required. Get in touch if you'd like the details.

E-mail received and replied. Look forward to doing business with you :)

Slightly on-topic, anyone else shocked at the ending of Series Three of Sherlock?

How do you think Moriarty survived his "suicide"? Could it be someone else is using his identity as a ploy?

Discuss :D

Sorry I know this conversation's a bit old now but I too have been looking for this coat, or similar, for the past 3 years and I finally found what I believe to be a good-enough replica: it's from a small company called Sir Plus (they're based in London) and they specialise in this kind of infusion of Nehru-style with traditional men's clothes. This is actually a really good alternative coat - good find, my friend! I'd imagine it would need a bit of tailoring to get the fit just right - but overall, really great.
