Jedi knights and lightsabers

Why do the Jedi Knights, who are mostly right-handed, wear their lightsaber on the left-side ??? Is it reminiscent of the old Knights era ???
But during that period, Knight's swords had a blade so it asked to be wore on the left, to facilitate the "opening" of the sword...but Jedi...the blade is not open at all so they could wear the saber on the right hip, more easy to pick it up, no ?

I think it's because when they grab the lightsaber on the left side they can make a blocking movement directly. But if they had it on the right side they would only be able to do a movement that looks like the one a gunslingers do. Straight up.

Even though there's not blade hanging as you said, I think the idea still is to mimic the old swashbucklers drawing their swords that way. There's probably no real practicality to it, it's just cosmetic.

I can only speculate:

To continue on contec's thread of thought: Star Wars borrows a lot from the Japanese, and in Japanese sword fighting it is a common technique to draw the sword and cut in one motion from the left side with the right hand.

Early Episode 1 concept art had the lightsaber in a kind of pouch on the left side which was easier to draw from than from a covertec clip. With a covertech, you need to get fingers on both sides of the clip and draw the saber straight upwards in a motion that is quite awkward. It is easier to draw the clip from the belt than the saber from the clip. For some inexplicable reason, the covertec was chosen anyway, but the position remained.

You wear a blaster on the right side. If the lightsaber position does not matter so much, put it on the left side to balance the weight and to get it out of the way.

Because Mark Hamill is left-handed?

They never showed that the jedi had to use the covertec as we do (in our galaxy) so it was just made to look like a cool holding device for them.
I remember reading somewhere that it was a recharge port for the lightsaber....:unsure

Qui Gonn does that when they go to the Queen's palace.
