JB Replicas Dredd/Judge Helmet build Finished, pics on page 2

For those just starting the paint process I advise the following: Whenever possible, only apply the main colors over primer or the silver undercoat. If you don't want to mask each area separately, at least paint the red areas first. Most paints, except black, are semi transparent and it will frequently take multiple coats to to cover black while covering red can be done in a couple light coats. Incidentally, gloss black in enamel takes forever to dry, versus other colors or even satin black. Lacquer is much quicker to dry but you should stick with all lacquer or only paint enamel over lacquer....never the reverse. So, to summarize, lighter colors over black is a no no. If you must do that, use a primer over the black areas first. The primer will cover the black well to avoid "show through." But I strongly advise against painting black first, in any case. If you doubt what I've said, try drawing a black line over a red marker line then try it in reverse. Yellow over black is nearly impossible and after multiple coats it will still be a dull yellow instead of the bright color you would get by using a white primer first. The principal is that in reality, light reflecting off the surface is reflected differently by different surfaces and colors. Since most pigments, except high solid pigments, are transparent, the light travels through the top pigment and reflects off the bottom pigment which changes the color. It is most obvious with a black undercoat.:)

Re: JB Replicas Dredd/Judge Helmet build (Questions too)

Forgot about this thread for a bit but I had finished this the other day. Overall happy with how it turned out. Already shipped off to it's new owner
I'm glad to see you were able to unload the too small helmet. It looks great. Have you finished a Noden helmet yet? I have to say, you were well advised to find a larger helmet since my JB even fits me pretty snugly with the padding installed. I'm convinced that was the reason Karl Urban wears two sizes in the movie. He probably complained that he was getting a headache from the small helmet, after shooting a couple of scenes. I haven't worn mine for more than a few minutes but I'm fearful of that effect myself! The bottom of the helmet actually flexes outward now when I remove it.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get around to purchasing a Noden helmet...don't get me wrong, I still really want one! With the padding in this, it made it really really tight on my head.
