Jawa costume! *random gibberish* - done, ish!

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

do you have a pic of the mesh you used to keep the shape? Looks like it worked pretty well!

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

As a suggestion in the future if you make new builds and want to get it done fast, I've had some guys in our garrison take a hockey mask with black mesh glued onto it. Then fake LED tea candles with half cut ping pong balls over them to create the eyes.

But yours is coming along awesomely! Definitely like how bright the eyes are.

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

One thing you have not addressed is sound. I don't have a costume but I have a life-size figure. One of the easy things I did was attach an old iPod Shuffle connected to a mobile speaker. You can do the same with your phone and a wireless blue speaker. I made a playlist and play them on a continuous shuffle loop.

I used sound bytes lifted off the StarWars.com soundboard when they first started that feature. I think they have since protected the files to keep people from doing that but if you need the sound files, just let me know as I think I still have copies I could email you.

Thanks! Actually we don't really get any sort of hockey gear (ice hockey anyway!) here in the great and stupidly warm land of Oz, it's actually easier to make stuff than buy it a lot of the time!
Nice idea on the eyes though, I thought about lots of options but I took a cue from the eye blanks I bought for my hellcat. They were acrylic domes with LEDs cast in and I love the way they look in that costume, so I thought I'd give it a try myself! I think it worked well :)

True, I haven't really thought about sound. It's not a high priority for me, honestly, I prefer to just sort of be the character instead of playing sounds at people. Be a bit awkward trying to fumble for buttons or switches with the thick leather gloves, can't use a touchscreen either!
It's something I might consider later on if the costume seems to be lacking though :)

Oh! Almost missed this one :)
The mesh is that stiff fabric embroidery mesh you get, usually near the aida cloth. I use it for everything, it's the same stuff as I used for the vision ports here and on all my costumes :p

This is the one I use for eyes:

The stuff in the hood is the same, just has slightly bigger holes in. It's a bit pricey but so useful!

Edit:
Here's a sketch of the pattern I made up showing where the mesh goes in my hood and all that. Not entirely to scale of course, the bottom rectangle part should be two squares wide.

So here's the robe:

JawaRobeSleeveFray.jpgJawaRobeHanger.jpg
Very simple, lots of fraying. The opening is off to the side, just secured at the top with a single heavy duty hook and eye. I've made a sort of brown linen skirt that I'll wear underneath the robe so if it opens that's all you'll see.

Put it on for a bit to see what it looked like but couldn't get a good photo!

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

Wow! Looks fantastic! Thx for the hood info, i will prob try out the mesh idea for my hood.

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

Right. One boot so far. Covered but not yet weathered. It's actually pretty difficult to get the boot on with the wrapping on the ankle part, but after a bit of modification it's now not too bad. Surprised at how the fabric's managing to stay in place with all my pulling on it, but yay! Weathering will help a lot too, and I'd like to double-wrap a few parts if I get some new fabric later on.

Couple of quick fixes; sleeve fraying and robe closure.

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

Weathering!

Two paint colours, both have the same acrylic colours in them mixed with fabric medium but in slightly different proportions. I used a dash of dark brown, flesh, cool yellow and white. I drybrushed the fabric, using the darker one first which gave a sort of yellowed staining effect then used the lighter colour to punch up the lightness and add a sort of sandy dusty look. After that I mixed the lighter colour with a bit more white and repeated, just to make sure it was bright enough to read well.

Tried to make the mask from a plastic hockey mask, but the gf said it was too uncomfortable. Im going to try your foam technique.

Bandoliers arrived. Very fast too, yay!

Now for weathering :D

Hope it works for you! I use foam for everything :p

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

weathering looks nice. On this "off center opening" on the robe is that supposed to run all the way down the length in front, like an opening? or is it just to tighten it up around the neck area?
I'm not really concerned with 501st approval, just more curious about what the purpose of that is.

It's an actual opening and goes all the way down, yeah. You can see it on some jawas in the movie, and I like to have the freedom of movement that an open robe gives so I went that way :) It's prefectly fine to have a simple closed robe too. Whatever works! :D

Re: Jawa costume! *random gibberish*

Quick update - I'm going to try and finish this little Jawa tonight so I can take it to genghiscon this weekend! I'm doing a cosplay making panel and it'll be a nice thing to show off :)

Had to redo the boots, or at least make this second pair to conform to the 501st CRL (I believe it's mistaken using the robe fabric but whatevs, I'll have two pairs!) so this is boot one of pair two:

JawaBootMk2Unweathered.jpg

I'm covering the second one as soon as my little guy goes to bed, then weathering them both with leftover paint from the robe weathering.

Finished painting my droid caller today, figured it'd be pretty banged up and a bit rusty if it's been in the grotty little clutches of jawas for a while.

I'll be wearing my Jawa at Oz Comic Con tomorrow and the old gloves were a bit awful to wear (stiff leather, sweaty, hard to get on and off, left seam lines all over me afterwards) so I made some new ones.

I also finished assembling and painting my jawa blaster (cast courtesy of woodman). Needs a holster later on when I have some scrap leather, but for now I can just carry it.
