James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc. **New video 10/21**

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc.

Need to get some more pics and a vid of me in the suit, but here are a few shots from the other night. I'm currently finishing up the fur on the head (need to trim some of it down around the eyes/nose) and still need to paint the spots and add the back scales, then he will be done!

***Here is a shot of one of the servos. They sit inside the eye and control the blink/wink.***

On topic: The suit is amazing, really! We need some full-on action shots and a video!

Coming this weekend :)

Then I will officially create my rpf costume contest entry thread.

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc.

Wow, you totally nailed the head as well! Faultless and amazing work!

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc.

I know some of you have been waiting for it so here it is - a short video of me in the entire suit. The quality is poor as it was taken with an iphone in the garage. I will be getting some better shots this week out in the sunshine which will make it easier to see.

I have a small adjustment to make on the arms as I can't lift them as high as I want to yet, but that will be an easy fix. Also, in the suit up video, the servos weren't hooked up yet so the eyes weren't working. However, if you watch the second video, you will see them in action. Make sure you pay attention to the end :)

***I forgot to mention that Sulley's tail is filled with little styrofoam balls that you use in bean bag chairs. My wife had some left over from a newborn posing pad (she's a photographer) and I made the spine spikes out of foam.

Any spots on Sulley not covered in fur also had a coat of silicone caulking applied prior to paint (claws included). I did this to help smooth out any rough edges from carving, and to seal it so that the paint could be applied. This also makes it a bit more durable when people want to give you a hug.***

Thanks man, I can't wait to wear him around the neighbourhood and to my son's school.

Almost done my wife's Boo costume as well. I'll get some pics up of it up here soon.

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc. **New video added 10/14**

That is so cool.. i wouldn't even know how to start making something like that!

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc. **New video added 10/14**

Thanks for the compliment. I will get better video this weekend and the wife's costume should be done by then as well. Here is a teaser pic of Boo at about 90% completion (keep in mind it's a budget build so it won't be screen accurate - I will have both costumes built for under $300 total).

***Here is a shot of the dome structure on Boo. I used the same conduit as Sulley's frame and some plastic box straps as well to keep it nice and light. I then coated it in foam***

That suit is absolutely amazing! Well done!

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc. **New video added 10/14**

Your sully is great.. How is the visibility from the suit? hard to wear? How are you moving the eyes and arms? Your arms do fit into the arms .. the costume look way to wide.

Re: James P Sullivan - Monsters Inc. **New video added 10/14**

Visibility is obviously limited but I can still see directly in front of me out of the mouth. That's why I have a handler :)

My arms are inside his arms and the eyes are controlled with servos.

Took a better video outside tonight. I couldn't get my wife convinced to put Boo on though as she said she was too cold from taking my video. I will have pics of us both together after next Friday when we go to the local Halloween Howler.

***I never did take a lot of pics of the Boo build as I was trying to get it done quickly. However, there are 2 hoops in the body made out of conduit - one is at the top near the opening and the other is about 2' below the top one. The lower one is used primarily to support the harness system. All 3 hoops are covered with foam pipe insulation. This was done to give it a nice rounded edge and to also protect the wearer from the screws/bolts being used to hold it together.

The body was then covered in foam before the whole thing was wrapped in the purple fabric. Although it's not overly accurate to the parade suit, it fit my budget oh so nicely at $2/yard.

the hair came from a mop I picked up on clearance at Canadian Tire and the eyes were Dollar store styrofoam balls. I attached a piece of wire to the top of the dome, painted the eyes, then glued them on. I had some flexible wire protection tube that worked perfectly to hide the eye wires. Plus it was ribbed like the original costume.

The arms were made out of foam and then covered in a light grey fabric. I also ended up making her some shoes the same way, but I don't have any pics of them on hand.

Lastly, it should be pointed out that Sulley's pants are the only part of either costume that was sewn. Everything else was held together with hot glue***
